LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The No. 21 UC San Diego women's tennis team was defeated by 17th-ranked Cal State L.A., 7-2, at the CSULA Tennis Complex Saturday. The Tritons posted one win in both doubles and singles play, but it was not enough to conquer a strong Golden Eagle squad.

Tritons Katie Mulloy and Laura Wilke were the sole duo to tally a win in doubles, defeating CSULA's Liz Franco and Tiffany Leung, 8-5, at No. 3. Melinda Chu and Tara Vanooteghem put up a solid fight at No. 2, narrowly falling by a margin of 9-8. At No. 1, Melissa Breisacher and Jacquelyn Davis lost to Christie Lau and Larn McShane, 8-4.

On the singles ladder, Davis recorded a commanding win in her second match of the day, nearly shutting out Franco, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6. The Golden Eagles swept the rest of the singles contests, winning in straight sets at positions one through four. At No. 5, Krystal Mizuguchi forced three sets against Leung before falling, 6-0, 6-7, 10-4.

"We played well, but not well enough against a very tough CSULA team," said UCSD head coach Liz LaPlante.

The Tritons fell to 6-11 with the loss.

UCSD returns home for an Apr. 11 matchup against Cal State Stanislaus. The tilt is set to start at 2 p.m. at the Northview Tennis Courts.
