Tritons Defeated 8-1 by No. 6 Abilene Christian

MALIBU, Calif. - No. 21 UC San Diego was defeated by No. 6 Abilene Christian, 8-1, at Pepperdine on Sunday. The Tritons won at No. 3 doubles but were swept in singles play for the loss.

UCSD fell to 6-13 on the season while the Wildcats improved to 21-3. 

Katie Mulloy and Laura Wilke grabbed UCSD's lone win of the day at No. 3 doubles, defeating ACU's Jaclyn Walker and Emily Conrad, 8-4. At No. 1, Melissa Breisacher and Jacquelyn Davis fell to Hannah Kelley and Micah Hermsdorf, 8-4, and Melinda Chu and Tara Vanooteghem lost to Laura Mongin and Brittney Reed, 8-0, at No. 2.

On the singles side, the Wildcats swept the Tritons with all matches finishing in straight sets. At No. 1, Julia Mongin defeated Breisacher, 6-1, 6-0. Mongin is ranked second in the nation, having amassed an impressive 14-1 record at No. 1. Samantha Yeung fought for several wins at No. 5, eventually falling to Conrad, 6-2, 6-3.

"We were outplayed by a strong team, but played some great tennis at No. 3 doubles to get the win," said UCSD head coach Liz LaPlante.

UCSD will return to Northview Tennis Courts Monday to face Concordia at 2 p.m.
