Release: Friday 02/08/2013

STOCKTON, Calif. - UC San Diego dropped a four-set decision to No. 11 Pacific in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) men's volleyball match at the Alex G. Spanos Center on Friday night. Set scores were 25-22, 17-25, 26-24 and 25-17.

With a sixth straight league defeat since a 2-1 start, UCSD fell to 4-9 overall and 2-7 in the MPSF. Pacific moved to 5-3 overall and an even 3-3 in conference play. The Tritons have now lost five in a row to the Tigers after taking six consecutive meetings for their only six triumphs over UOP in program history from 2008-10.

Pacific pulled out the all-important and tight third set to break a 1-1 deadlock. The game featured 15 tie scores and eight lead changes. Having taken the second set with relative ease, 25-17, UCSD led 12-10 midway through the third and again later by a 21-19 tally. Following a UOP timeout, the teams traded attack errors and then service errors as the Tritons still clung to a 23-21 edge. A solo block and a kill on back-to-back points by Tommy Carmody pulled the home side even, however.

Nick Iorfino's kill gave UCSD one last lead, but it was a Carmody attack once more that brought the Tigers level, and after a less accurate attempt from Iorfino, a Taylor Hughes kill gave UOP the set and the impetus to take the match.

Junior setter Mike Brunsting produced the second double-double of his career and the second by a UCSD player in 2013 with match highs of 46 assists and 15 digs. His 15 digs were a career high and equaled the top single-match total by a Triton this year. The Poway native added a team-best five total blocks to match his career best, alongside two kills on three attempts and a service ace.

Cheyne Hayes led three Tritons in double-figure kills with a match-high 15. Iorfino and Carl Eberts contributed 13 and 10, respectively. Chase Frishman was a second UCSD player with double-digit digs, collecting 10.

Hughes paced Pacific with 12 kills and seven digs. Junior libero Javier Caceres, the conference's leader in digs, turned in 15 for the night. Carmody finished with nine kills and a match-high six total blocks.

UCSD stays in the Bay Area to wrap up a four-match road stretch on Saturday night, with first serve at Maples Pavilion in Palo Alto against No. 4 Stanford set for 7 p.m. Live video, live audio and live stats are all available free of charge.

Triton Notes: Pacific leads the all-time series between the teams, 34-6 ... With 10 more kills tonight, Carl Eberts increased his career total to 899, ninth-most in program history, as he vies to become just the fifth Triton ever to reach the 1,000-kill plateau ... Eberts has 48 matches with 10-plus kills for his career, including nine this season ... Chase Frishman now has 546 digs for his career, fifth-most all-time at UCSD ... Frishman has four matches this season with 10-plus digs and 21 for his career ... Cheyne Hayes achieved a double-digit kills total for the fifth time in 2013 and sixth time in his career ... Nick Iorfino has eight matches with double-digit kills for his career and three this season ... Joel Schow drew his first start of 2013 and second of his career.
