The 21st-ranked UC San Diego baseball team plays host to Point Loma Nazarene University this Tuesday night, Feb. 12, in the first of three meetings in 2013 between the city rivals. First pitch underneath the lights at Triton Ballpark is set for 6 p.m.

The game will serve as UCSD's final tune-up before it opens defense of its four consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) regular-season titles this Friday night, Feb. 15, hosting Cal State Stanislaus for a four-game set.

All UCSD home games at Triton Ballpark this season again feature a live online video stream and live stats, both free of charge. Weekday games during the conference season will also have audio commentary, with former Triton pitcher Tim Strombel (2007-08) calling the action. UCSD's conference opener against Cal State Stanislaus this Friday, Feb. 15 (6 p.m.), marks Strombel's season debut. Fans can access live video and live stats from the Schedule/Results tab of the baseball page at Most road games will also at minimum have live stats available, with links active at that same location on the baseball team's Schedule/Results page. Finally, starting lineups, live between-inning updates and other in-game news and notes can be found during home contests by following Triton Baseball all season long on the UCSD Athletics Twitter handle (@UCSDtritons).

Point Loma Nazarene is off to a 1-4 start, with all five games coming against UCSD's CCAA foes. The Sea Lions began their season suffering a three-game home sweep at the hands of Cal State Monterey Bay, before splitting a doubleheader at Cal State Dominguez Hills this past Saturday, Feb. 9. In the 5-3 win in the first opener of the twin bill, Zach Allen drove in three runs and Tyler Garkow held the Toros to just two runs over seven innings. Joe Schaefer is in his fifth season in charge of the Sea Lions. The PLNU pitching coach is longtime San Diegan John Gunther, who was on the Tritons' staff in years past.

The Tritons lead the all-time series between the crosstown rivals, 42-37-1. The teams have only contested a pair of preseason exhibitions the last two years, with UCSD posting shutout victories of 6-0 and 5-0 at Triton Ballpark on Jan. 30, 2012, and Jan. 29, 2011, respectively. The last regular-season match-up came in La Jolla on Feb. 2, 2010, with the Sea Lions besting then-third-ranked UCSD by the final score of 8-6. The teams will play again at PLNU's scenic Carroll B. Land Stadium on Tuesday, April 2 (3 p.m.) and conclude the season series back in La Jolla a week later on Tuesday, April 9 (6 p.m.).

UCSD moved up one spot for the second straight week, from No. 22 to No. 21, in the latest installment of the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II poll, released each Monday. The Tritons dropped from No. 17 to No. 22 in the second in-season edition of the D2 Baseball News listing. College Baseball Lineup has the Tritons still at No. 20, where they had them rated in the preseason. The fourth and final national poll for the NCAA Division II, conducted by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), has stuck with its preseason ranking thus far, with UCSD beginning the new year at No. 19.

Senior All-American centerfielder Danny Susdorf has extended his career-best hitting streak to 23 games over the first two weekends of the 2013 season. He had concluded his junior year on a 17-game run in 2012 (Apr. 19-May 19). This is the second hit streak of his career of double-digit games, following a 10-gamer late in 2011 (Apr. 30-May 14). With four doubles already this year, tied with junior newcomer Dillon Moyer for the team lead, Susdorf has moved into the program's all-time list in the category at No. 10, now with 45 two-baggers.

Danny Susdorf also has a lengthy defensive streak intact, having now handled 182 defensive chances in a row without an error, spanning 73 games dating back to his last charged error on April 29, 2011, at Chico State. He put away all 125 chances without a miscue in 2012 and 22 thus far to begin the 2013 season, including a pair of outfield assists at Grand Canyon.

Junior infielder Garrett Tuck has made 78 straight starts and appeared in 85 consecutive games since late in the 2011 campaign. He and fourth-year junior teammate Nick La Face were the only two Tritons to have both played in and started all 57 contests a year ago. Tuck, second on the team in 2012 behind Danny Susdorf (84) with 77 hits, matched his single-game career high with a four-hit effort in the rubber-game victory over Colorado Mesa on Feb. 3. La Face, incidentally, has drawn 63 starts in a row.

Following Tuesday night's affair, UCSD begins conference activity this Friday, Feb. 15, against Cal State Stanislaus. Senior ace Ryan Goodbrand's first pitch is slated for 6 p.m. at Triton Ballpark. The Tritons and Warriors then continue their four-game set with a noon doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 16, with the Sunday finale set for an 11 a.m. start.
