The Tritons dropped to 10-7 overall and an even 5-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Cal Poly Pomona snapped a three-game slide in moving to 11-6 overall and 4-6 in league play. UCSD had taken Thursday's opener of the four-game set, 7-6.

The teams combined to bat around a total of three times in the game, with the visiting Broncos accomplishing the feat in a three-run fourth and the decisive four-run eighth, and UCSD sending 11 men to the plate during a five-run seventh.

Seven of Cal Poly Pomona's 10 runs on the night, the most given up by the Tritons in a single game this season, came with two outs, including each of the first six as the Broncos led 6-2 through six frames.

UCSD stormed back in the seventh. Garrett Tuck led off with a double down the left field line that looked to be simply misjudged by Bronco leftfielder Chris Carlson. Scott Liske followed with a five-pitch walk and on a 2-2 offering by freshman left-handed starter Max Bethell, Triton shortstop Dillon Moyer pulled his first collegiate home run just inside the foul pole in left to close the gap to within one at 6-5.

The rally did not end there, as freshman second baseman Troy Cruz singled to chase Bethell out of the game. With one away, Richard Seigel doubled deep to left center, putting a pair of Tritons in scoring position. Junior catcher Nick La Face coaxed a walk on the final toss of the night by Andy Amaro, and the bases were full against senior left-hander Ryan Dunn, who had tossed 2.1 no-hit frames on Thursday.

Junior leftfielder Justin Rahn poked a ground ball at Jason Padlo, but the Bronco third baseman skipped his throw home, with catcher Nick O'Loughlin unable to corral and Cruz crossing the plate to knot the score. After a foulout, Tuck, in his second turn at-bat in the frame, drew a walk to force in Seigel for the 8-7 lead.

UCSD was unable to secure a shutdown inning in the next half, however, as leadoff batter Trevor Magno singled through the left side to kick-start the CPP offense again, and centerfielder Jordan Whitman provided the big blow with a bases-clearing, three-run double to left center on a 3-2 offering from Richard Kilbury.

The Broncos added a fourth run in the inning on an infield single to score Whitman. The Tritons pulled one back in the bottom half on an RBI groundout by Seigel, but that was all they would get. Cal Poly Pomona closer Cody Ponce fanned La Face and pinch-hitter Sam Michaels swinging to end the eighth and ninth with runners at third and second, respectively. The freshman earned his league-best fourth save.

Scott Zeman (0-1) was pinned with the loss for UCSD. Starter Dan Kolodin had allowed three runs on eight hits and four walks over the first five innings, striking out three. The Tritons used six arms in all, with CPP utilizing five of its own.

La Face had opened the scoring by lifting a solo home run over the wall in left with one gone in the second for his first long-ball of the year. He finished 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored. Moyer was 2-for-5 with his home run, a triple, run scored and three RBI. Tuck was 1-for-2 with a double, walk, sacrifice hit, sacrifice fly, run scored and two RBI.

RJ Shanks (1-1) picked up the win after registering just the final out of the seventh on strikes with the bases still loaded in the big UCSD inning. Bethell had gone the first six. Magno, Bo Walter and Whitman had three hits apiece as Triton pitching gave up a season-high 16 on the night.

The four-game series now shifts to Pomona on Saturday, Mar. 2, and concludes with a doubleheader at Scolinos Field beginning at 11 a.m. The twin bill marks the start of a season-long eight-game road stretch for UCSD. Both contests can be heard here.
