UCSD in Fifth Place After One Round at SoCal Intercollegiate

MISSION VIEJO, Calif. - The UC San Diego golf team had a strong first day of play at the 63rd Annual Southern California Intercollegiate Championship Monday and sits in fifth place among the 16-team field following the opening round. UCSD is hosting the two-day, three-round event at Mission Viejo Country Club in Orange County.

Under clear, blue skies with temperatures in the mid-70s, the Tritons' "A" team totaled an 18-over par 302, 10 strokes behind leader Cal State Stanislaus (+8, 292). Grand Canyon is second (+12, 296) and Cal State Monterey Bay is third (+14, 298).

UCSD is also fielding a "B" team in the tournament. The squad is in 14th place after totaling a 36-over 320.

Individually, Ryan Eady of Southwest Baptist is leading the field as he fired a 4-under 67, one of four players that finished below par. Belmont Abbey's John Frisby is second (-3, 68) and Rob Damschen of Cal State Stanislaus is in third place (-2, 69).

Leading the Tritons is sophomore Jay Lim, who is in a five-way tie for seventh place with a 2-over 73. "B" team member Ryan Rankin is tied for 17th as the junior carded a 4-over 75. Clayton Yamaguchi and Daniel Yang, both freshmen, are tied for 24th as they both shot a 5-over 76. Junior Jacob Williams is tied for 33rd (+6, 77) and classmate Lewis Simon is tied for 44th (+8, 79). Freshman Jeff Roseth of the "B" team is also tied for 44th.

Other Tritons competing on the "B" team include junior Fredrik Palmer-Picard (T-68, +11, 82), junior David Smith (T-73, +13, 84) and sophomore Marc Herrmann (83rd, +26, 97).

A total of 88 players make up the field, eight of those competing as individuals. 

The MVCC course played at 6,792 yards in the first round. The second round layout is 6,799 yards while the final round will be 6,770 yards.

Play was suspended due to darkness during the second round, which will be continued Tuesday morning with a 7 a.m. start. The third and final round is scheduled to get underway at 8:15 a.m.

Cal State Stanislaus was the team champion at last year's SoCal Intercollegiate, while Sonoma State's Alex Marry was the top individual. UCSD was led by Herrmann, who tied for 21st.
