Pitching Powers UCSD in Doubleheader Sweep of San Francisco State
Release: Friday 03/29/2013

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The UC San Diego softball team came away with a pair of California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) victories over San Francisco State Friday afternoon, taking game one 3-0 and following with a 3-1 win in the second contest at Triton Softball Field.

UCSD improved to 19-13 overall and 15-7 in CCAA play. SFSU dropped to 13-18 on the season, 7-15 in league play.

Alexis Edwards (3-2) tossed a complete game, two-hitter in the opener, striking out five and walking three. She was perfect through 3.1 innings before giving up a single to Lucy Fernandez. The only other hit Edwards surrendered was a single in the sixth by Kylie Grabowski.

At the plate, freshman Callie Grant led the Tritons' seven-hit attack, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. She doubled down the left field line to lead things off in the bottom of the first and gave UCSD a 1-0 advantage when she came around to score on Emily McQuaid's opposite field single.

Timely defense and Edwards' pitching  kept UCSD on top and Patti Gerckens' club gave the freshman lefty some breathing room, plating single runs in the fourth and fifth.

Shortstop Mya Romero roped a one-out double in the fourth and eventually scored on a single to left by Taylor Sepulveda.

UCSD played small ball to manufacture its final run in the fifth. Grant was again the catalyst with a lead-off single. McQuaid sacrificed her to second and she took third on a fly ball out by Nicole Spangler. Grant scurried home on a wild pitch by Marisa Ibarra (10-7), who absorbed the loss for the Gators.

Junior right hander Jennifer Manuel (6-1) went the distance in the second game for the Tritons, giving up an early run but stifling San Francisco State on five hits while striking out three.

The Gators hit the scoreboard quickly, posting their first and only run of the day in the opening inning. Ashley Huff drew a lead-off walk, was sacrificed to second and came in to score on a single to center by Courtney Gravel. Another walk put runners at first and second with one out, but the Triton infield turned the first of the team's three double plays to end the threat.

The SFSU lead was short-lived as UCSD parlayed singles by Kirsten Willmon, Sepulveda and Amani Proctor into a tying run in the second.

The Tritons went ahead for good in the third. With the bases loaded, pinch-runner Mckenna Clewett scored from third on a fielder's choice to take a 2-1 lead. The Tritons had a chance to break it open, but left the bases loaded.

UCSD plated an insurance run in the fifth as Romero smacked her second double of the day and came around on an RBI single by Willmon.

The Tritons finished with eight hits, two each by McQuaid and Willmon, and were spotless in the field behind Manuel.

Emily Gibson (3-9) was tagged with the loss for the Gators.

Friday was UCSD's annual Breast Cancer Awareness day. Sylvia Byrne, mother of SFSU head coach (and former UCSD assistant) Cristina Byrne, threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

The Tritons and Gators complete the series Saturday, March 30, with doubleheader action set to begin at 11 a.m. UCSD will be honoring its three graduating seniors - Michelle Escamilla, Dyanna Imoto and Spangler - prior to the first pitch.
