TURLOCK, Calif. - Despite high winds Tuesday, the UC San Diego men's golf team retained its standing from Monday and placed sixth of 16 teams at the 40th Hanny Stanislaus Invitational, hosted by Cal State Stanislaus at the Turlock Golf and Country Club.
UCSD totaled a 63-over par 927 for the 54-hole event. The Tritons shot a 300 and a 310 in Monday's first two rounds and followed with a 317 in Tuesday's third and final round. The team was in sixth place at the end of the day Monday as well.
Leading the way for the Tritons was sophomore Jay Lim. He carded a 13-over par 229 to finish in a three-way tie for 16th place in the field of 87 competitors. Lim fired a 71 in the first round, a 75 in the second and an 83 in the third on the par-72, 6,641-yard layout. Lim's 71 on Monday was the only below-par round for UCSD.
Cal State Stanislaus, ranked 15th nationally, won the team championship for the 26th time, carding a 24-over 888. The Warriors' 284 in round two was the lowest of the tournament. CSUS has won 15 of the last 18 Hanny Stanislaus Invitationals.
Finishing a close second was No. 8 Cal State Monterey Bay, two strokes behind CSUS with a +26 890. Western Washington, ranked 10th in the country, was a distant third (+51, 915), Sonoma State was fourth (+55, 919) and No. 23 Chico State placed fifth (+62, 926).
The individual crown went to Trevor Clayton of Stanislaus, who shot 72-66-76 for a 2-under 214. He was the only golfer to finish below par. Western Washington's Mark Strickland was second (+4, 220), while Paul Smith of CSUS and Dylan Jackson of Monterey Bay tied for third (+6, 222).
Also on the links for UCSD were Fredrik Palmer-Picard (T-25th, 232), Lewis Simon (T-30th, 235), Clayton Yamaguchi (T-34th, 236) and Ryan Rankin (T-66th, 247).
In Tuesday's blustery conditions, the scoring average on the course was 81.31. Cal State Monterey Bay's 301 was the day's low round as all other teams shot over 310.
Overall for the tournament, UCSD was fourth in par-3 scoring (3.38, +23), fifth in par-4 scoring (4.41, +61) and 10th in par-5 scoring (5.25, +15). The Tritons produced 150 pars (4th) and 18 birdies (T-11th), while Rankin and Simon each holed eagles (1st).
UCSD placed 11th at the 2012 Hanny Stanislaus Invitational.
The Tritons now head into championship season, competing at the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships April 22-23 at Hunter Ranch in Paso Robles, Calif. Last year, UCSD placed third, its highest finish since joining the league in 2001.
