SANTA CLARA, Calif. -
The 13th-ranked and top-seeded UC San Diego women’s water polo team opened Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championship play Friday morning with a dominating performance on both ends of the pool, defeating eighth seed Cal State San Bernardino 14-1 in the tournament opener.
“This was a great kick off for us in our pursuit of a conference championship,” said UCSD head coach Brad Kreutzkamp. “The team played sharp and I was especially pleased with our defensive effort, led by (Courtney) Miller in the cage.”
Defensively, the Tritons posted strong numbers across the board.
Courtney Miller totaled 12 saves in the opening three quarters while Alexsee Wilcox had five stops after replacing Miller.
In the field, the Tritons made it difficult for the Coyotes to get a shot off, as they totaled 16 steals. Freshman Laurel Kistler came away with five individually.
On the offensive front, the Tritons made a statement early, scoring five goals in the first quarter. Melissa Bartow tallied two in the opening minute of play, as the two-meter player finished with a team-high five goals.
UCSD added another three goals to open the second, before CSUSB’s single goal of the game came at the 2:36 mark off a penalty shot made by senior Misty Vu.
The Tritons tallied another five unanswered goals through the second half to earn the 14-1 victory.
UCSD now holds a 23-13 overall record and will face Colorado State on Saturday, April 27 at 12:30 p.m. in semifinal play.
