Big Second Half Leads to 83-67 Win at Cal State East Bay

HAYWARD, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's basketball team made 60 percent of its shots in the second half to earn an 83-67 victory against league opponent Cal State East Bay Saturday night at Pioneer Gymnasium.

A winner of six of its last eight games, UCSD upped its season record to 13-9 and is now 9-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). CSUEB fell to 7-17 overall and 4-14 in the conference. With four regular season games left, the Tritons sit alone in seventh place, one game behind the three teams in front of them. The top six squads earn a berth in the league tournament.

UCSD led by just three points, 34-31, at halftime, but grew its advantage to as many as 19 points in the second half.

After shooting 41.4 percent (12-29) overall and 25 percent (3-12) from three-point land in the opening half, the Tritons fired it up in the second, hitting 60 percent (12-20) of its shots and 62.5 percent (5-8) from beyond the arc.

Hunter Walker led all players with 23 points. He was 7-for-13 from the field with two three-pointers while hitting all seven of his free throws. The sophomore also added five rebounds, an assist, two blocks and two steals.

Three other Tritons finished with at least 13 points, including Drew Dyer (17), Adam Klie (14) and James McCann (13). Klie had a game-high eight rebounds and McCann amassed six assists while going 8-for-8 from the charity stripe.

Aaron Cameron led the Pioneers with 14 points. Jarred Jourdan added 13 and Ryan Hebebrand had 12 to go along with a team-best six boards.

CSUEB's bench players accounted for 32 points. UCSD scored 20 points off of 15 Pioneer turnovers.

UCSD closes out its home slate next week, hosting San Francisco State on Friday, Feb. 21, and Sonoma State on Saturday, Feb. 22. Both games tip at 7:30 p.m. The three seniors on the roster (Matt Bailey, McCann and MacKenzie McCullough) will be honored prior to Saturday's contest at RIMAC Arena.
