Release: Monday 03/15/2014
by UCSD

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's rowing team posted several solid results Saturday at the Sacramento State Invitational, contested on Lake Natoma along the American River within the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area.

UCSD rowed in seven races, including Varsity 8, JV 8, Novice 8, Second Novice 8, Varsity 4, JV 4 and Novice 4. Competition included Gonzaga, Humboldt State, Mills, Orange Coast College, Sacramento State and St. Mary's.

The Tritons posted a third-place finish in the Varsity 4, recording a time of 7:58.2. Gonzaga won the race in 7:33.1, while Sacramento State was second with a time of 7:45.2.

UCSD's Novice 8 crew also rowed to a third-place finish in 7:23.9. Gonzaga took the victory in 7:09.4 and Sacramento State was second in 7:19.9.

In the JV 8 event, the Tritons placed fourth behind three Division I schools, crossing the finish line in 7:24.8. Gonzaga was first (6:46.6), Sacramento State was second (6:58.0) and St. Mary's placed third (7:06.7).

UCSD raced to a fourth-place finish in the Novice 4, also finishing behind a trio of Division I teams with a time of 8:32.3. Gonzaga topped the field (7:52.8), St. Mary's took second (8:16.5) and Sacramento State was third (8:19.8).

All four crews came in ahead of Division II rival Humboldt State.

The Tritons' Varsity 8 boat finished fifth with a time of 7:06.6, placing behind Gonzaga (6:38.6), Sacramento State (6:48.2), St. Mary's (6:57.2) and Humboldt State (6:58.0).

"Our Varsity 8 was unable to hold an early lead on Humboldt State, which rowed through us in the middle of the race," said UCSD head coach Colin Truex. "There is potential in this line-up, but they have yet to put together a full race."

UC San Diego placed fourth in the Second Novice 8 and fifth in the JV 4. Gonzaga also won both of those races.

"The Division II West Region is tough again this year, and we have a lot of work to do and speed to gain to get to the NCAA Championships for a second consecutive season," said Truex.

UCSD hosts San Diego State March 28 on Mission Bay.

"We have a couple of weeks to re-visit the line-ups and run through selection again before we take on a much-improved San Diego State team," said Truex.
