UCSD Rows Against San Diego State on Mission Bay
Release: Friday 03/28/2014

SAN DIEGO - In a locals-only dual Friday on Mission Bay, the UC San Diego women's rowing team took on crosstown rival San Diego State.

In sunny, 65-degree weather with calm water, San Diego State won four of five races on the 1930-meter course.

"It was a solid day for us against a greatly improved San Diego State team," said UCSD head coach Colin Truex. "Each boat fought incredibly hard and rowed very well. We were definitely the underdog, but we were scrappy enough to press all the way down the course. I am proud of the way the team attacked, scraped and clawed for every meter."

The Tritons picked up a victory in the Novice 8 event, crossing the finish line in 6:59.7. The Aztecs were almost five seconds slower, coming in at 7:04.5. UCSD's crew consisted of Amber Harris, Lauren Iannetta, Kimberly McCune, Sofia DeWolfe, Sophia Krause-Levy, Jordan Levy, Jennifer Dutton and Madalynne Carattini.

"The novices carried the day and the future looks very bright for the athletes in this boat," said Truex.

In the Varsity 8 race, SDSU posted a winning time of 6:33.4, topping UCSD's 6:40.8. The Aztecs also rowed to victories in the JV 8, Varsity 4 and Open 4+ races.

"It was a perfect way to tune up for the next two huge races that we have coming up," said Truex.

UCSD takes part in the San Diego Crew Classic, April 5-6 on Mission Bay. Following the annual extravaganza, the Tritons will compete in the Covered Bridge Regatta, which will be held in Eugene, Ore., on April 12.
