Tritons Win Fourth Annual Reis Cup, 3-1 Over Cal State San Marcos
LA JOLLA, Calif. - Meagan Wright (Bonita/Bonita Vista HS) had a match-high 21 kills to lead the University of California San Diego women's volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over cross-county rival Cal State San Marcos Saturday in the fourth annual Reis Cup at RIMAC Arena.
Scores of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match were 23-25, 25-20, 25-17 and 25-22 in favor of UC San Diego, which improved to 6-5 overall and stayed unbeaten in the league at 3-0.
Wright led all players with 23.5 total points en route to earning Reis Cup MVP honors. The senior outside hitter posted a season-best .327 hitting percentage with five errors in 49 attacks. She added seven digs and five block assists.
Junior outside Amanda Colla (Carlsbad/San Dieguito Academy) recorded her best outing of the season, finishing with 14 kills, 15 digs, two solo blocks, two assists and a service ace. Colla hit .481, making only one error in 27 attempts.
Jessyca Beksa, a freshman outside, had 11 kills for UCSD, sophomore Kayla Evans (San Diego/Del Norte HS) ended up with 25 assists, 14 digs and four aces and freshman libero Lindsey Chun led the Tritons with 18 digs. Sophomore outside/opposite Morgan Kissick had five blocks, two of those solos.
The Tritons hit .264 (56-14-159) as a team, their highest of the year thus far. They were also tough up front, out-blocking CSUSM 13-4.
Four Cougars hit double-figure kill totals including Lauren Lee (13), Maddy Newcombe (12), Madi Anderson (11) and Brooke Butler (10). Butler added 13 digs, while Aleese Wheaton also had a double-double with 41 assists and 21 digs. Samantha Flores amassed a match-best 24 digs.
Cal State San Marcos hit .150 (55-28-160).
It was just the second-ever meeting between the two teams. UC San Diego won in straight sets in San Marcos last season.
UCSD is now 3-1 in the Reis Cup, named after former Triton player Karen Reis, who passed away tragically in 2012.
After playing its last seven matches at home, UC San Diego hits the road next week to take on Cal State East Bay (Sept. 30) and Cal State Monterey Bay (Oct. 1). Both contests start at 7:00 p.m.
