LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's volleyball program has added a pair of standout players to its roster - Stephanie Solich, a true freshman out of the Sacramento area, and Caitlin Brenton, a transfer from NCAA Division I Columbia University. The announcement was made Wednesday by UCSD head coach Ricci Luyties.
Solich and Brenton will join the Tritons in the fall of 2013.
Solich is a 6'0" outside hitter from Del Oro High School in Loomis, Calif., where she garnered All-Sierra Foothill League Honorable Mention honors as a junior and senior. During her senior season, Solich led the Golden Eagles in service aces, while she was tops in kills as a junior. She was selected to play in the 2013 Sacramento All-Star Optimist game.
Solich made the varsity squad as a freshman at St. Francis High School prior to moving on to Del Oro.
"Stephanie is a six-rotation outside hitter that can do everything well," said Luyties. "She has a strong arm and can make things look easy in the back row."
Brenton, a 5'11" right side hitter, spent the last two seasons competing for Columbia in New York City. In 2012, she saw action in 79 of the team's 84 sets, finishing second on the squad with 173 kills and 68 blocks. Brenton earned All-Ivy League Second Team honors as the Lions placed second in the conference, the program's best-ever finish. As a freshman in 2011, she totaled 145 kills and led the team with 60 blocks.
A 2011 graduate of Valley Christian High School in San Jose, Brenton captained the Warriors as a junior and senior. A three-year varsity letterwinner, she helped lead Valley Christian to a pair of second place sectional finishes during her sophomore and junior campaigns. Brenton was an Honor Roll member all four years in high school.
"Caitlin is athletic and will add a big block to match up against the tough outside hitters in the conference," said Luyties. "She will bring experience and a strong offensive presence to our lineup."
Solich and Brenton join outside hitter Makensie Bates, who committed to UCSD back in December of 2012.
UCSD finished its 2012 season with a 20-11 overall record. The Tritons qualified for postseason play for the seventh consecutive year and traveled to Hawaii to compete at the NCAA Division II West Regional.
