With the victory, UCSD improves to 10-7 overall and moves above .500 in CCAA play for the first time since September 15 at 7-6. The Tritons have now won five of their last six matches to grab a share of fourth place in the conference standings with four weeks remaining in the regular season.
Humboldt State falls to 1-16 overall and 1-12 in the CCAA.
Junior outsider hitter Katie Condon led four Tritons with double-digit kills totals with a match-high 14, while Roxanne Brunsting finished with 12 kills, 20 assists and 16 digs for her second consecutive triple-double. Hillary Williamson tallied 11 kills and 10 digs, while Julia Freidenberg added 10 kills on .312 hitting.
As a team, UCSD held Humboldt to a hitting percentage of just .023 for the match, the lowest mark for a Triton opponent this season.
The Tritons captured the first three points of the opening set and scored six straight at one point to take a 20-9 advantage. A kill by Brunsting made it 24-13 and, after the Lumberjacks scored on back-to-back plays, Williamson sent down the deciding kill for the 25-15 set victory.
UCSD held a 9-7 lead in set two before HSU rallied to take a 14-12 advantage on a Freidenberg attack error. Trailing 21-18, the Tritons got a kill from Condon and an attack error from the Lumberjacks' Oceana Matsubu to pull within a point, but Taylor Manuel and Toni Kroeker answered with kills to push the Humboldt lead to 23-20. Ashley Neale would register the final kill at 24-22 as the Lumberjacks tied the match at one.
The Tritons raced out to a 14-4 advantage in the third set following a Freidenberg kill and consecutive attack errors by the home team. UCSD scored five consecutive points for a 20-6 lead and back-to-back kills from Brunsting and Condon made it 23-11. The Lumberjacks would not roll over though, scoring seven unanswered points to pull within five at 23-18, but Condon wrapped up the set for the Tritons with a kill for the 25-19 victory.
It was all UCSD in the fourth set, as well, as the Tritons scored 10 of the first 12 points to take control. Leading 15-10, UCSD used a 6-0 run to extend the margin to 21-10 and back-to-back kills by Kaitlin Potter and Audrey Green minutes later made it 24-12. Manuel followed with a kill and a service ace for HSU, but her service error would deliver the final point, as the Tritons took the set and the match, 25-14.
Manuel finished with eight kills to lead the Lumberjacks, while Joliann Arzadon had 21 assists and 15 digs.
UCSD will return to RIMAC Arena next weekend to take on San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay. The Tritons will square off with the Gators on Friday and the Otters on Saturday, with both matches starting at 7:00 p.m.
