Showdown with No. 22 Cal State East Bay Highlights Busy Week for Red-Hot Tritons
Release: Tuesday 10/26/2010
LA JOLLA, Calif. - Winners of five in a row, the UC San Diego women's volleyball team will play three times in four days this week, looking to extend its current streak and continue its accent in the conference standings.

The Tritons will travel to Hayward to take on 22nd-ranked Cal State East Bay on Wednesday, before returning to La Jolla for matchups with Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State on Friday and Saturday, respectively. All three contests will start at 7:00 p.m.

Saturday's tilt with the Wildcats will be UCSD's final regular season appearance at RIMAC Arena and Triton seniors Audrey Green, Kaitlin Potter, Alanna Rutan and Cara Simonsen will be honored with a special ceremony prior to the match.

Riding their longest winning streak of the season, the Tritons enter Wednesday's showdown with Cal State East Bay sporting an overall record of 12-7 and a 9-6 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association play after posting home victories over San Francisco State (3-1) and Cal State Monterey Bay (3-0) last week. UCSD has won seven of its last eight overall to move into a three-way tie with Monterey Bay and Sonoma State with seven matches remaining.

Cal State East Bay begins the week at 12-6 overall and two games ahead of the Tritons in the CCAA standings with a league mark of 11-4. The Pioneers, who have won five straight and eight of their last nine, also defeated the Otters (3-0) and Gators (3-2) over the weekend.

The Tritons will not only be looking to end that streak Wednesday, they will also be seeking a split in the season series with East Bay after the Pioneers won the first meeting of the year on September 15. Katie Allen sent down a match-high 20 kills and Roxanne Neely tallied 11 kills, 10 digs and 21 assists to lead CSUEB to the 27-25, 25-22, 19-25, 22-25, 15-3 triumph at RIMAC Arena.

Potter finished with a career-high 18 kills in a losing effort for the Tritons, while Katie Condon had 17 kills and 16 digs. The loss was the first of five straight for UCSD.

Head coach Ricci Luyties' squad will also be looking to get even with Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State after falling victim to both squads during the aforementioned skid. The Tritons lost a 3-2 decision with the Wildcats on September 24 and then suffered a 3-1 setback against the Warriors the following night.

Cal State Stanislaus enters Friday's matchup with an overall record of 11-10 and a league tally of 8-8, while Chico State begins play this week at 11-11 and 6-10 in the CCAA.

UCSD has been firing on all cylinders lately, hitting .241 as a squad during its five-match winning streak. The Tritons were absolutely dominant in their last outing, recording a season-best .347 hitting percentage in the 3-0 sweep of Monterey Bay. Luyties' squad has been equally impressive defensively, limiting the opposition to just .151 hitting during the streak.

Condon has averaged a team-high 3.75 kills to go with 3.45 digs per set over the last five, while Roxanne Brunsting has posted averages of 2.85 kills, 5.95 assists and 3.25 digs. Brunsting has finished with a triple-double (kills-assists-digs) in each of the last four matches, while also tallying eight blocks and a team-high 12 service aces during that span.
