Tritons Mount Comeback to Win 11th Straight Match

POMONA, Calif. - It wasn't exactly easy, but the UC San Diego women's volleyball team improved its win streak to 11 Friday with a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Cal Poly Pomona in CCAA action at Darlene May Gym. After losing the first two sets by scores of 25-22, 25-22, the Tritons rallied to win the next three, 25-15, 25-19 and 15-11.

UCSD, which received votes in this week's AVCA Division II Coaches Poll, improved to 18-7 overall and 15-6 in CCAA play. With its fourth straight loss, Cal Poly Pomona dropped to 10-16 and 8-13. The Tritons swept the season series as they took a 3-1 win on Oct. 9 in La Jolla.

Four Tritons hit double figures in kills as UCSD held a 71-50 advantage in that column. Katie Condon led all players with 15 kills and a team-high 23 digs. Roxanne Brunsting had 14 kills and was followed by Hillary Williamson with 12 and Julia Freidenberg with 11. Brunsting collected her sixth triple-double of the season with 36 assists and 16 digs.

UCSD was solid on the defensive side of the court as four players also had 10 or more digs. Aside from Condon and Brunsting, Williamson and Janessa Werhane each had 20. The Tritons out-dug the Broncos 98-82.

The Broncos got 13 kills, six blocks, four digs, a pair of service aces and a match-high 18 points from Jessica Doerner. Kristin McNeese had 11 kills and 11 digs, while Kelly Bonja had a match-best 24 digs and Lindsey Poulos had seven stuffs at the net. Cal Poly Pomona out-blocked UC San Diego 10-8.

Both squads hit sub-.200 with UCSD at .187 (71-34-198) and Cal Poly Pomona at .141 (50-24-185). However, a .321 clip in the fifth set, combined with the Broncos hitting .160, iced the win for the Tritons.

With the score tied 5-5 in the fifth and deciding set, the Broncos exploded for four straight points consisting of a kill and two aces by Doerner and a hitting error by the Tritons. However, UCSD came right back and rattled off five consecutive points. Williamson and Freidenberg had two kills each in the surge as the Tritons took a 10-9 lead. At 11-11, UC San Diego put a stamp on it with four unanswered points, two of those coming on Brunsting kills.

The Tritons started off sluggishly, hitting .160 in the opening set and .000 in the second.

UCSD is an even 4-4 in five-set matches this season.

The Tritons conclude their regular season Saturday at Cal State San Bernardino ( 7 p.m.). The Coyotes have already wrapped up their fifth consecutive CCAA Championship, their eighth title in the last ten years. Ranked sixth overall, CSUSB sits in the top slot in the West. In early October, the Coyotes defeated the Tritons 3-1 at RIMAC Arena.

Cal State San Bernardino won its 11th straight match with a sweep over Cal State East Bay Friday.

For the second week in a row, UCSD was ranked fourth in the NCAA West Regional poll. The Tritons' position should lead them to their fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
