HONOLULU, Hawaii - Hillary Williamson and Lauren Demos combined for 28 kills as the 24th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team won its season opener Thursday, a 3-1 victory over host Hawaii Pacific at the Hilton Waikiki Beach Invitational.
Scores went 25-14, 21-25, 25-10 and 25-19. HPU fell to 1-2 on the year with the loss.
"Overall, I thought our defense was solid all night," said Triton head coach Ricci Luyties. "We had an entire team make a good effort against a tough opponent in their home gym."
Williamson, a senior outside, led all players with 15 kills and 16 points while adding 13 digs. Demos, a true freshman, followed with 13 kills and hit .600 (13-1-20) on the night. The middle blocker finished off the first set with a kill. Outside Katie Condon had 17 digs and true freshman Amber Hawthorne was just behind with 16. Hawthorne and senior Roxanne Brunsting split the setting duties with Hawthorne totaling 20 assists and Brunsting recording 24.
Hawaii Pacific was led by Natasha Bell, who recorded 13 kills and 12 digs. Kyra Pelayo had a match-high 24 digs.
The Tritons out-hit the Sea Warriors .225 (48-16-142) to .036 (40-34-167), while HPU out-blocked UCSD 7-5.
UCSD continues play at the Waikiki Beach Invitational Friday with an 8 p.m. (PT) match against No. 13 Seattle Pacific. Tourney play wraps up Saturday as the Tritons take on Northwest Nazarene at 4:30 p.m. (PT) and Chaminade at 10:30 p.m. (PT).
