HONOLULU, Hawaii - The UC San Diego women's volleyball team picked up its first upset victory and first sweep of the season Friday as the 24th-ranked Tritons blanked No. 13 Seattle Pacific at Chaminade's McCabe Gym. The match was part of the second day of action at the Hilton Waikiki Beach Invitational.
Set scores were 25-16, 25-21 and 25-21.
UCSD (2-0) had a 51-33 advantage in kills and out-hit Seattle Pacific .246 (51-18-134) to .149 (33-15-121). The Falcons out-blocked the Tritons 6-3.
"We played a solid match," said UCSD head coach Ricci Luyties. "We started out playing consistently in set one and really got off to a good start. Our goal was not to let up on them the whole match and I think we did a great job of that."
UCSD was once again paced by the play of outside hitter Hillary Williamson, who finished with a match-high 18 kills, two shy of her career-best. In Thursday night's win over tournament co-host Hawaii Pacific, the senior led all players with 15 put aways.
Freshman middle blocker Lauren Demos and senior outside Katie Condon each posted nine kills and Condon had a match-high 16 digs. Senior setter Roxanne Brunsting had 34 assists and 15 digs, the same dig total as senior libero Janessa Werhane.
"Hillary had a monster game, she passed really well and did everything," said Luyties. "Katie was very consistent tonight and, once again, freshman Lauren Demos played really well. Roxy (Brunsting) also had a solid night setting."
Seattle Pacific (1-1), which hit under .100 in two of three sets, got 11 kills from Cailin Fellows. Anna Herold had 14 digs.
The Tritons finish play at the tourney Saturday with a pair of matches. They take on Northwest Nazarene at 4:30 p.m. (PT) and play co-host Chaminade at 10:30 p.m. (PT). The match against Chaminade will feature live stats as well as a live audio broadcast.
