HONOLULU, Hawaii - The UCSD women's volleyball team stayed perfect on the season as it finished play undefeated at the Waikiki Beach Invitational with a pair of wins Saturday - a 3-1 victory over Northwest Nazarene and a sweep against co-host Chaminade.
The 24th-ranked Tritons improved to 4-0 on the young season with the pair of wins.
Scores against Northwest Nazarene were 25-27, 25-11, 25-19, 25-22 from Hawaii Pacific's St. Andrew's Priory. It was the first loss of the season for the Crusaders, who dropped to 2-1.
For the third consecutive match, outside hitter Hillary Williamson was a machine, equaling a career-high with 20 kills. She completed the first double-double of her season by adding 12 digs.
Outside hitter/setter Roxanne Brunsting finished one kill short of a triple-double with 25 assists, 15 digs and nine kills.
UCSD had three Tritons with 10 or more kills as outside Katie Condon recorded 16 and Lauren Demos, a freshman middle blocker, finished with 12. Condon recorded a double-double with 12 kills. Demos and Williamson each had two service aces. Libero Janessa Werhane had a match-high 17 digs.
As a team, UC San Diego hit .305 (68-25-141), the first time it had gone north of .300 this year. The Tritons held a huge 71-44 advantage in digs.
The Crusaders got 10 kills from Haley Abbott and 15 digs from Kailey Trautmann. NNU hit just .162 (44-20-148) for the match.
"We had a lot of errors in game one, lost a lot of transition points, but played much better in the second," said UCSD head coach Ricci Luyties. "Overall, it was a great team effort, everyone was contributing."
Scores against Chaminade (1-5) were 25-21, 25-17 and 26-24 in a tight match at McCabe Gym.
An 11-block effort at the net provided a spark for UCSD. Middle Julia Freidenberg had six blocks to help the team to its best showing up front this season. Williamson had four blocks while Demos added three.
Williamson continued her torrid play and led the Tritons in kills, this time with 10, also another match-high. Brunsting had 12 digs and Condon, Williamson and Brittany Lombardi each totaled nine.
Neither team was particularly effective on the attack as UCSD hit .108 (36-22-130) and CUH swung at a paltry .034 (29-25-119). Both teams hit under .100 in two of three sets. The Tritons opened with a .078 (11-7-51) and the Swords hit -.049 (8-10-41) in the first set.
Despite the hitting numbers, the opening set was very competitive. The Swords led for a good stretch until the Tritons tied it at 11-11. However, they didn't grab their first lead until 19-18.
The third set was similar to the first as UCSD didn't hold an advantage until 18-17.
Condon, Demos and Williamson were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Tritons return to the mainland to host CCAA opponent Cal Poly Pomona on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. at RIMAC Arena, the team's home opener. San Francisco State visits La Jolla for a rare Sunday match on the 11th at 1 p.m.
