Condon is Lights Out in Sweep of Cal Poly Pomona
Release: Friday 09/09/2011

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Katie Condon recorded a double-double to help lead the 15th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep over Cal Poly Pomona Friday night at RIMAC Arena.

Scores were 25-14, 25-15 and 25-21 in the California Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAA) opener for both squads. It was also the first home match for the Tritons this season, who improved to 5-0 with the victory. The Broncos dropped to 3-2 overall.

Condon put away a match-high 13 kills and added 13 digs to grab her second double-double of the year. The senior outside hitter swung at .343 (13-1-35) while collecting 14.5 points and a pair of blocks.

The Tritons also got a solid performance out of middle blocker Julia Freidenberg, who hit .571 with eight kills and no errors in 14 attacks. Outside Hillary Williamson, who had led UCSD in kills in the first four matches of the season, finished with nine kills and 19 digs. Libero Janessa Werhane had a match-best 22 digs.

The Tritons were tough on defense and out-dug CPP 76-54. As a team, they hit .262 (47-13-130) while the Broncos hit a lowly .085 (30-19-130). UC San Diego also had a 6-4 edge in blocks.

"I thought overall our defense was very good," said UCSD head coach Ricci Luyties. "We also did a nice job transitioning to offense."

The Broncos got 11 kills from Karissa Lagmay. Diana Lake and Kelly Bonja each totaled 18 digs.

The opening set was back-and-forth until UCSD reeled off seven straight points to take a commanding 18-11 lead. On the first point in the run, Condon had a kill for a sideout. She then served the next six points, which included two kills each for Williamson and freshman middle Lauren Demos. The Tritons had their best attack in the set, hitting .385 (18-3-39).

Set number two was all Tritons as they jumped out to a 9-1 lead that was never relinquished.

It looked as if UCSD was going to run away with the third frame as well, but a late run by Cal Poly Pomona made it interesting. Up 20-11 at one point, the Tritons found their lead dwindle to three points at 23-20 and again at 24-21. However, senior outside/setter Roxanne Brunsting ended it with a kill.

"I'm really happy we didn't have any big letdowns because they (Cal Poly Pomona) have given us trouble in the past, including last season when we went five sets with them," said Luyties. "We were ready to play and ready for everything they were giving to us."

UCSD hosts league opponent San Francisco State on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 1 p.m. UCSD students are admitted free to all home matches with a valid ID.
