SEASIDE, Calif. - The 16th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team suffered a 3-1 defeat against un-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action Friday at the Kelp Bed.
Scores were 25-19, 31-29, 21-25 and 25-21. It was the third straight loss for UCSD, which dropped to 10-4 overall and 6-4 in the CCAA. CSUMB improved to 6-7 and 3-7.
The match featured 39 ties and 17 lead changes. Despite being out-blocked 14-8, the Otters still managed to post a better hitting percentage than the Tritons, .176 (62-29-188) to .167 (52-22-180).
UCSD got double-doubles from Hillary Williamson (12 kills, 15 blocks) and Roxanne Brunsting (25 assists, 18 digs). Brunsting added eight kills and five blocks while Julia Freidenberg hit .583 with seven kills and no errors in 12 attacks. Freshman Lauren Demos had a career-high eight blocks.
For Monterey Bay, Rheann Fall had a match-best 23 kills and added 19 digs. Dionna Lucas rang up 26 digs as the Otters had a 93 to 84 advantage in scoops.
The last time the Tritons lost three consecutive matches was in September of 2010. It was just the second-ever win for Cal State Monterey Bay over UCSD since the series began in 2004. The Tritons have won 13 of the 15 meetings, with the Otters getting their first series win in 2010.
UCSD plays at Cal State East Bay Saturday at 7 p.m. The Pioneers, 10-5 overall and 5-5 in the CCAA, lost in four sets against No. 3 Cal State San Bernardino Friday at home.
