With five regular season matches remaining, UCSD moved up from fifth to third in this week’s NCAA West Region rankings, falling in line behind Cal State San Bernardino and BYU-Hawaii. Seattle Pacific is fourth, Sonoma State fifth, Hawaii Pacific sixth, Northwest Nazarene seventh and Hawaii-Hilo eighth. The regular season champions from the CCAA, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and the Pacific West Conference earn automatic berths in the eight-team NCAA Championships West Regional, which will be held Nov. 17-20 on the campus of the top seed. The remaining five squads are chosen according to their regional ranking.
Condon Named CCAA Player of the Week
Katie Condon was named the CCAA Player of the Week Monday after leading the Tritons to a pair of league wins on the road. The senior outside hitter totaled 31 kills, 32 digs, two aces and four blocks while recording a .297 (31-4-91) attack percentage over the span. In a come-from-behind, five-set victory at Cal State Stanislaus, Condon had match-highs with 17 kills, 22 digs and 21 points. She added two aces and a career-high four blocks and hit .357 (17-2-42). The night before, Condon finished with a match-high 14 kills and added 10 digs in a four-set win at Chico State. The first Triton to receive the league honor this season, she now has seven double-doubles on the year.
Ain’t Life Grand?
Several Tritons are closing in on the 1,000 mark in career statistical categories including Roxanne Brunsting (989 assists), Hillary Williamson (962 digs, 948 kills) and Katie Condon (937 kills). Janessa Werhane had 28 digs on Oct. 15 at Cal Poly Pomona to put the senior libero over 1,000 for her career. She’s just the seventh Triton to reach the mark in the history of the program.
Roxanne Brunsting posted her second triple-double of the season last week with 13 kills, 23 assists and 19 digs at Cal State Stanislaus. The only Triton to record a triple-double this year, she also has 15 double-doubles to her credit. With 16 digs vs. Cal State San Bernardino on Oct. 5, Brunsting moved into second place on UCSD’s career list. She currently has 1,504 digs to her name. The school record is 1,628 by Natalie Facchini (2004-07), 124 more than Brunsting. Needing just 11 more assists for 1,000, Brunsting will become only the second Triton in school history to finish their career with 1,000 digs and 1,000 assists.
