POMONA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's volleyball team held off league opponent Cal Poly Pomona Thursday night to pick up a 3-1 victory on the road at Kellogg Gym.

UCSD lost the opening set 25-20, but rebounded to take the next three by scores of 25-16, 25-23 and 26-24. The Tritons improved to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), while the Broncos fell to 6-5 and 2-2.

For the sixth time this season, freshman outside hitter Danielle Dahle led UCSD in kills with a match-high 19. She hit .378 (19-2-45) and added nine digs, three digs and three blocks.

Junior opposite Sheridan Taylor, in her first season with the Tritons after transferring from Rutgers, posted a career-best 12 kills and hit .444 with four errors in 18 attacks. Taylor also contributed with five assists, three digs and a pair of blocks.

Triton setter Amber Hawthorne had a productive night, recording a double-double with 39 assists and 10 digs to go along with six kills, an ace and two blocks.

Middle Sara McCutchan had a team-high five blocks with nine kills and outside Lizzy Andrews finished with seven kills, five digs, two blocks and a service ace. Freshman Katy Woodward had a team-high 16 digs.

"Lizzy came off the bench and ignited us with her best all-around match yet as a Triton," said UCSD head coach Ricci Luyties.

The Broncos were led by Diana Lake and Taylr Kreutziger, who had 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Kelly Bonja led all players with 18 digs.

UCSD hit .268 (60-20-149) and CPP swung at .221 (55-1-154).

Dahle had a kill to even set one at 12-12 before CPP scored four straight points to take the lead for good. Lake and Lauren Adams each had two kills during the run. UCSD would get no closer than three points the rest of the way.

"We had trouble capitalizing on our scoring chances in the first set," said Luyties.

The Tritons came out strong in the second set, running out to a 6-1 lead behind a six-point run paced by two kills apiece for Dahle and Lauren Demos. UCSD kept pouring it on and led 18-9 following a Taylor kill. Demos closed out the set with another kill, evening the match at 1-1.

"We switched to a one-setter offense in the second set and played well, so it was an easy decision to stick with that," said Luyties.

The third set played much tighter, staying within one or two points until a service ace by Hawthorne put the Tritons up 16-13. UCSD pushed its lead to five at 19-14 after an ace by Andrews and a bad set by the Broncos. With it looking like a sure win for UCSD at 21-16, CPP climbed back into it with four straight points, getting within one at 21-20. The Tritons struck right back with three consecutive scores, moving to set point at 24-20 behind a Hawthorne kill, a Bronco attack error and a block by Andrews and McCutchan. After a Cal Poly Pomona timeout, the Tritons committed three straight attack errors but finally put the set away with a kill from McCutchan.

At 3-3 in the fourth frame, UCSD distanced itself by scoring four consecutive points with McCutchan contributing a kill and a block. The Tritons pushed their lead to seven at 13-6 on a block by Demos and Hawthorne before the Broncos repeated third set action by getting themselves back in it. Four times they came within one point before finally knotting the score at 22-22 on a Kreutziger kill. Back-to-back attack errors by UCSD gave CPP two set points at 24-22, but the Tritons proved resilient by reeling off four straight points to close out the set and the match. Kills by Andrews and Dahle, along with two errors by the Broncos - one on attack, the other on a bad set - gave UCSD its ninth consecutive win over Cal Poly Pomona.

The Tritons continue CCAA play on the road with a match at Humboldt State on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. Live stats can be found at http://sidearmstats.com/humboldt/wvball/scoreboard.aspx. The Lumberjacks were swept by Cal State San Bernardino in Arcata tonight.
