UCSD Sits in 11th After Two Rounds at Wildcat Classic

CORNING, Calif. - UC San Diego's Jay Lim shot an even-par 144 Monday to put him in a tie for sixth place after two rounds of the InterWest Insurance Wildcat Classic at Sevillano Links.

Following two full rounds of play, UCSD sits in 11th place, totaling a 23-over 599 on the par-72 course, which played at 6,751 yards Monday. The Tritons are 30 strokes behind leader Cal State Stanislaus (7-under 569) with Cal State Monterey Bay and Western Washington tied for second (even-par 576).

UCSD shot a 300 in the opening round and finished the second round a stroke better at 299. However, the Tritons fell a spot in the team standings. Stanislaus improved by five strokes in the second round, totaling a 282 compared to its 287 in the first.  

Lim shot a 2-under-par 70 in the first round and a two-over 74 in the second for an even-par 144, tying him with Chico State's Ricky Owaki and Monterey Bay's Kolby Teare for sixth place.

Also competing for the Tritons are Clayton Yamaguchi (79-72--151, T-41st), Lewis Simon (76-76--152, T-47th), Jacob Williams (75-77--152, T-47th) and Marc Herrmann (83-89--172, 79th).

Leading the field is Rob Damschen of Cal State Stanislaus, who is 9-under after shooting 66-69--135. Grand Canyon's Mark Geddes is second (68-71--139) and Monterey Bay's Anton Rosen is third (69-71--140).

Five teams that are competing currently rank in the Golf Coaches Association of America's top 15, including Western Washington (No. 5), Chico State (No. 6), Cal State Monterey Bay (No. 7), Cal State Stanislaus (No. 10) and Grand Canyon (No. 15).

Also competing in Corning are Academy of Art, Cal Baptist, Cal State East Bay, Cal State San Bernardino, Dixie State, Holy Names, Northwest Nazarene, Notre Dame de Namur, Saint Martin's and Simon Fraser.

The Wildcat Classic wraps up Tuesday with a third round, scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. The course will play at 6,885 yards for round three.

At last year's Wildcat Classic, also held at Sevillano Links, the Tritons placed ninth of 16 teams with a 71-over 935. Simon was UCSD's top individual, finishing in a tie for 21st with a 13-over 229 on the John Daly Signature course.
