TRITONS BEGIN ROAD BACK TO CARY AGAINST MAVERICKS
An ambitious and promising 2013 UC San Diego baseball squad loaded with talent begins what it hopes to be a road back to Cary this weekend with a three-game non-conference series against Colorado Mesa. Both teams are coming off of appearances at NCAA Regionals a year ago, and are each ranked in the top-25 in the preseason Collegiate Baseball News poll, with the Tritons at No. 23 and the Mavericks at No. 20. UCSD is in search this season of a first return trip to Cary, N.C., for the NCAA Championship since back-to-back forays in 2009 and 2010, including a national runner-up showing in 2010.

WEEKEND MATCH-UPS
On Opening Night on Friday, Feb. 1, first pitch is slated for 6 p.m., with single games set for 2 p.m. on Saturday and 12 p.m. on Sunday. Friday's opener should feature a battle of senior right-handers, with Triton ace Ryan Goodbrand, who earned All-America honorable mention in his first year in the program after posting an unbeaten 11-0 win-loss mark (2.90 ERA, 15 GS, 99.1 IP, 2 CG), up against Aaron Corwin, a transfer who spent the last two seasons at Texas Tech (2-0, 3.62, 30 appearances). On Saturday, sophomore right-hander Dan Kolodin should get his first collegiate start after nine relief stints a year ago, facing another senior right-handed newcomer for the Mavericks in Matt Williams (previously at Division II University of Tampa). Sunday's finale will see sophomore left-hander Trevor Scott on the hill for UCSD against a third senior right-hander for CMU, Nolan Snell.

SCOUTING COLORADO MESA
Colorado Mesa University, formerly known as Mesa State College, hails from Grand Junction, Colo. The Mavericks are defending Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) regular-season champions and are picked to defend their title this year. They finished their 2012 campaign (39-16, 33-9 RMAC) at the Central Regional in Mankato, Minn., getting blanked by New Mexico Highlands, 2-0, before being eliminated by host Minnesota State, 7-5. The Mavericks lost one All-American in outfielder Jeff Popick (.424, 17 2B, 7 HR, 65 RBI), but return another in shortstop Braden Box, who hit .395 while leading the team with 55 runs scored and 30 stolen bases on 34 attempts. Box is one of five preseason All-RMAC selections for CMU, joined by Austin Kaiser, Colton Little, Colton Schoelkopf and Nolan Snell. Snell was tabbed as the preseason RMAC Pitcher of the Year for the second straight year. He led the league with 105 strikeouts in 2012. Chris Hanks is in his 15th season as the Colorado Mesa head coach.

SERIES HISTORY
UCSD holds a slim edge in the all-time series history between these teams, 5-4. They met four times a year ago in Grand Junction, Colo., with the then-29th-ranked host Mavericks taking a 3-1 series victory. The Tritons salvaged the final game of the set, 11-7, after dropping the Friday opener, 14-4, and getting swept in a doubleheader the following day, 6-4 and 3-2. UCSD previously posted a four-game series sweep of the Mavericks, then named Mesa State, at Triton Ballpark, Feb. 11-13, 2011. The first-ever meeting came in 2007 when the Mavericks knocked off the Tritons at the NCAA Division II West Regional in Los Angeles.

LIVE COVERAGE
All UCSD home games at Triton Ballpark this season will again feature a live online video stream and live stats, both free of charge. Weekday night games during the conference season will also have audio commentary, with former Triton pitcher Tim Strombel calling the action. Fans can access live video and live stats from the Schedule/Results tab of the baseball page at UCSDtritons.com. Most road games will also at minimum have live stats available, with links active at that same location on the baseball team's Schedule/Results page. Finally, starting lineups, live between-inning updates and other in-game news and notes can be found by following Triton Baseball all season long on the UCSD Athletics Twitter handle (@UCSDtritons).

TICKET PRICES
General admission tickets to all regular-season home games at Triton Ballpark are $5, and are available for purchase beginning one hour prior to start time. All UCSD students are admitted FREE with valid ID. A parking permit is required on the UCSD campus on weekdays. They can be purchased at the machine at the entrance to the Triton Ballpark parking lot.

UCSD LOADED FOR 2013 RUN
UCSD heads into the 2013 season as the four-time defending CCAA regular-season and tournament champion. Eric Newman, the 2012 CCAA Coach of the Year in his first year in charge, welcomes back nine of his top 10 hitters from a year ago, as well as valuable arms like Ryan Goodbrand, Trevor Scott and bullpen ace Richard Kilbury. Tops among those returning bats is All-American centerfielder Danny Susdorf, who was third in the league with his team-best .393 batting average and enters his final college campaign on a 17-game hit streak while also having handled 160 defensive chances in a row without an error, spanning 67 games dating back to April 29, 2011, in Chico. Goodbrand, who went a perfect 11-0, will take the ball from Newman in series openers from the get-go after moving into that role last March 2 in Hayward. The Tritons were 13-2 in his 15 starts in 2012, and Goodbrand earned the winning decision in his last four appearances. UCSD will, however, still have to replace 31 of 57 starts and 257 innings out of the 483 thrown a year ago, or 53 percent.

TRITONS RATED SECOND IN WEST
UCSD was ranked second in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) preseason West Region top-10 poll. UCSD earned one of six first-place votes and 55 total points to rank just behind defending West Region champion Chico State, which garnered the remaining five first-place nods and totalled 58 points.
