LA JOLLA, Calif. -
The No. 17 UC San Diego women's water polo team earned a thrilling 11-10 upset victory over Western Water Polo Association foe No. 13 Loyola Marymount Friday evening at Canyonview Pool.
UCSD freshman defender Alexis Wieseler scored a game-high seven goals, while goalie Courtney Miller finished with 11 saves as the Tritons improved to 6-7 overall and remained perfect in WWPA play at 3-0.
The Lions now sit at 9-6 on the season and 1-1 in the conference.
LMU held a lead through the entire first half. UCSD first went ahead two minutes into the third quarter with a goal by Wieseler, her fifth of the game. The Tritons came out of the quarter with a one goal lead at 8-7 after Melissa Bartow scored her first goal of the game from two meters.
In the fourth, neither team scored until 6:27 as LMU's Danielle Johnson netted her first goal of the game to tie it up at eight. UCSD had bad luck early on, earning a streak of offensive calls in the front court. However, the Tritons bounced back, drawing back-to-back exclusions and scoring the go-ahead goal with 3:44 remaining.
Wieseler scored two more goals to give the Tritons some breathing room at 11-9 with 1:57 to go in regulation.
The Lions scored to get back within a goal. With five seconds remaining, Wieseler was ejected from two-meters. Laura Lopez made a lob attempt with just a second left, but Miller was there to make the stop and preserve the Triton victory.
Ivana Castro and Alexandra Honny each scored three goals for LMU.
