22nd-Ranked Tritons Slated to Place Second by CCAA Coaches
Release: Wednesday 08/28/2013

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's volleyball team, ranked 22nd nationally, has been slated to finish second in the 2013 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings according to the league's annual preseason coaches poll, released Wednesday.

Seven-time defending CCAA champion Cal State San Bernardino was picked to repeat once again in 2013. The Coyotes, ranked 14th in the country, garnered seven of 12 first-place votes and 115 total points in the poll.

Following CSUSB was UCSD in second (one first-place vote, 107 points), Sonoma State in third (three first-place votes, 105 points) and Cal State L.A. in fourth (81 points) with Chico State rounding out the top five (74 points).

Cal State Dominguez Hills was sixth (one first-place vote, 71 points) and was trailed by Cal State East Bay (60 points), San Francisco State (57 points), Cal Poly Pomona (52 points), Cal State Monterey Bay (33 points), Cal State Stanislaus (23 points) and Humboldt State (14 points).

UCSD returns all but one player from a 2012 squad that went 20-11 overall and placed fourth in the CCAA with a 15-7 mark. The Tritons qualified for their seventh consecutive trip to the NCAA postseason, where they were defeated by host BYU-Hawaii in the first round of the West Regional.

Head coach Ricci Luyties, going into his fourth season leading the Tritons, welcomes back the bulk of last year's starting lineup, including AVCA All-West Region picks Danielle Dahle and Sara McCutchan. Dahle, a sophomore outside hitter, was the AVCA West Region Freshman of the Year and a All-CCAA First Team selection in 2012. McCutchan, a junior middle blocker, along with junior setter Amber Hawthorne and sophomore outside Sophie Rowe, were named to the conference's second team.

The Tritons begin their 2013 campaign Sept. 7-8 at the Coyote Classic, hosted by Cal State San Bernardino. On a tough opening day of action, UCSD takes on No. 24 Central Washington (12 p.m.) and 13th-ranked Regis (5 p.m.). Saturday, the Tritons are up against Harding (12 p.m.) and Seattle Pacific (7 p.m.).

The Tritons return to RIMAC Arena Sept. 13-14 to host the UCSD Invitational. Also competing in the eight-team tourney are Alaska Anchorage, Cal Baptist, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State San Bernardino, No. 12 Fresno Pacific and Point Loma Nazarene.

CCAA action kicks off on the road for UCSD Sept. 20 and Sept. 21 at San Francisco State and Sonoma State, respectively. Both matches are set for 7 p.m. starts.
