Site: UCR Agricultural Operations Course
Terrain: The running surface is 85% flat, mixed in with a few rolling hills. The dirt will be hard-packed and watered before competition to reduce dusty conditions. 100-year-old orange groves and eucalyptus trees will provide shade to the competitors.

OPPONENTS
The Tritons will face numerous familiar Division II foes, while also competing against Division I, junior college and club teams. Among those racing, Cal Baptist is ranked No. 4, Cal Poly Pomona is ranked No. 7 and UCSD came in at No. 8 in the men’s USTFCCCA West Regional preseason rankings. On the women’s side, Cal State Stanislaus is slated No. 5 and Cal Poly Pomona rounds out the field at No. 10.

BEST FOOT FORWARD
The Tritons began the 2013 season in dominant fashion, powered by two second place finishes from Madison Tanner and Kellen Levy at the UCSD Opener. Overall, the Triton men brought home first place with an impressive 12 finishers in the top 15, while the women also topped the field with seven finishers among the top 10. Senior leader Chia Chang began her 2013 campaign with a strong finish in fourth place and sophomore Tareq Alwafai started his season with a third-place finish on the men's side. WARM-UP LAP
Sophomore Paige Hughes (San Diego/Valhalla HS) sported the Triton blue and gold for the first time last weekend, electrifying with a second place finish. Running in her first collegiate meet, freshman Ella Verhees (San Diego/Point Loma HS) impressed with a sixth place finish. On the men’s side, freshman Brendan Gee (Rancho Bernardo/Rancho Bernardo HS) also competed in his first collegiate meet. He crossed the finish line inside the top ten finishers, coming in ninth, respectively.

UP IN THE AIR
UCSD recently spent 10 days in the Mammoth Lakes region for a high-altitude training camp, returning to La Jolla on Wednesday, Sept. 4. Click here to view a photo gallery from the trip.

HEAD COACH NATE GARCIA
Former Triton student-athlete Nate Garcia is in his seventh season as head coach of the UCSD cross country program. He took over the reins in 2007 after spending five seasons as an assistant coach. Garcia was a four-year letterwinner in cross country and track at UCSD from 1996-2000. He earned numerous athletic and academic honors, including All-Academic District VIII and CCAA All-Academic accolades in 2000-01.
