Release: Wednesday 10/11/2013

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Joe Dietrich and Chase Cockerill combined for six goals to lead No. 13 UC San Diego over No. 20 California Baptist, 9-8, Friday. In a tale of two halves, the Tritons managed to grab a 6-2 lead at halftime and hold on for the win.

The Tritons improve to 8-8 on the year and 2-0 in the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) with the win, while CBU falls to 11-8 overall and 0-2 in WWPA play.

California Baptist was first on the scoreboard with a score from Cody Wetherbee early in the first period to grab its only lead of the match, 1-0. The Tritons responded by closing out the quarter with two straight goals from Dietrich and Cockerill to lead 2-1 at the end of the first.

UCSD exploded in the second quarter to expand its lead and grab momentum of the match by scoring four times. The Tritons scored the first three goals of the period, part of a 5-0 run by UCSD, with a score from David Higginson and a pair of goals from Cockerill. CBU answered by finding the back of the net with nine seconds remaining in the period before the Tritons and Dietrich countered right back, closing out the half with a skip-shot score to lead 6-2.

With all momentum heading in the Tritons favor, the Lancers managed to grab it right back with a strong second half. The Lancers outscored UCSD 3-1 in the third to cut the lead to 7-5. Dietrich scored the lone third-period goal for the Tritons with 33 seconds remaining.

UCSD received an insurance goal to start the final period from Jeffrey Jarvis, but the Lancers continued the comeback attempt until the final horn. CBU was able to cut the deficit to one, 8-7, following two scores from Trevor Rowland and Robert Nichols. The Tritons countered, however, with a score from Tommy Friedrich with 4:35 remaining to push the lead back to a pair, 9-7. The Lancers answered once again after a score to pull within one with 3:57 to play. Looking to tie game, the two teams exchanged defensive stops and timeouts before UCSD made one final stop with 10 seconds remaining to win by the final of 9-8.

Dietrich and Cockerill scored three goals apiece for the Tritons, while Cameron Ravanbach recorded nine saves in the cage.

Cody Wetherbee led California Baptist with three goals. Joseph Moorman managed 11 saves in the loss, respectively.

The Tritons now travel to Irvine to play in the SoCal Tournament this weekend. The first game of four begins tomorrow at 12:15 p.m. UCSD will take on No. 5 Cal for the second time in 2013 and look to avenge a 13-10 loss suffered at the Triton Invitational to begin 2013.
