LA JOLLA, Calif. -
Dameon Engblom has been named an assistant coach with the UC San Diego men's crew team. The announcement was made Wednesday by head coach Zach Johnson
Engblom will serve as coach of the freshman team as well as recruiting coordinator.
"We are very excited to welcome Coach Engblom to the program," said Johnson. "He has extensive knowledge of the Juniors scene, and he has proven that he can build winning crews at every level he has coached at."
Engblom arrives at UCSD after serving two years as the head men's varsity coach of Oakland Strokes Junior Crew, a team with which he began as an assistant coach in 2009. He also worked as a volunteer assistant coach for the Cal men's team while with the Strokes.
Engblom began his coaching career in 2005 with Sacramento State Associated Students Incorporated (ASI) as the men's coach of Capital Crew Novice. A year later, he was promoted to head coach of the varsity men's team, a position he held for three years. Engblom turned the squad into national contenders and led it to a fourth place finish in the 2009 U.S. Rowing Youth National Invitational.
While at ASI, Engblom simultaneously worked as an assistant coach of the Sacramento State men's team from 2007-08.
"I am excited for the opportunity to be joining UCSD Athletics," said Engblom. "It has been a dream of mine to coach collegiately since I began coaching in 2005. I look forward to working with similarly passionate people here."
Born and raised in Oregon, Engblom is a 2006 graduate of Sacramento State, earning a Bachelor's Degree in biological sciences with a minor in Spanish. He graduated from Del Campo High School in 1996.
Engblom replaces Colin Truex, who was recently named head women's crew coach at UCSD.
