Release: Friday 08/30/2013

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's rowing program has named former Triton Jeff Collett an assistant coach. The announcement was made Friday by head coach Zach Johnson.

Most recently, Collett worked with the Newport Aquatic Center in Newport Beach, serving as the program's head coach from 2010-13. Newport, with over 150 rowers, consistently placed in the top five in the Southwest Region. In addition to managing the racing and training schedules, Collett also oversaw the annual budget and fundraising efforts.

From 2009-10, Collett was an assistant coach with Newport, which won a California state title and the Southwest Region Team Points Trophy during that period. The Lightweight 8+ and Heavyweight 4+ crews both placed third at the U.S. Rowing Junior National Championships.

Collett helped host a U.S. Rowing High Performance Camp and participated in a pair of Junior National Team I.D. Camps.

As a student-athlete at UCSD from 2007-09, Collett rowed with the Varsity 8+ crew. In 2009, the Tritons won the San Diego Crew Classic Cal Cup and placed second at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships to advance to the IRA Championships for the first time in program history. Collett earned All-WIRA First Team honors that season.

Prior to transferring to UCSD, Collett attended Orange Coast College for the 2003-04 and 2006-07 academic years. In 2007, he captained the Varsity 8+ crew and was named OCC's Oarsman of the Year. His Novice "A" boat placed second at the WIRA Championships and fifth at the ECAC National Championships in 2004.

Collett earned a bachelor's degree in communication from UC San Diego in 2009 and an associate's degree in liberal arts from Orange Coast College in 2007.
