SAN DIEGO - The UC San Diego men's crew team claimed its eighth consecutive San Diego City Championship on Saturday, winning two out of three races against the University of San Diego and San Diego State on Mission Bay.
The Tritons turned in a strong performance in their first competition of the spring, as UCSD posted first place times in the varsity eight and freshman eight races.
The varsity eight boat defeated second place USD by a full nine seconds, with the UCSD JV eight boat placing third in front of SDSU.
The UCSD freshman eight boats finished one-two in their race, with the top freshman boat coming in a solid 20 seconds in front of the second freshman eight. USD followed in third place, with SDSU once again finishing fourth.
USD won the varsity four race by open water.
Head coach Zach Johnson was pleased with his team's early season performance.
"USD is showing very good speed for this time of year and we were fortunate to have a good race," he said.
The Tritons will be back in action next Saturday when they take part in the Opening Day Regatta in Newport Beach.
