LA JOLLA, Calif. - After wrapping up a weekend of tough competition at the San Diego Crew Classic, the UC San Diego men's crew team will head to the nation's capital to row in the George Washington Rowing Invitational.

The regatta will field boats from five seasoned Division I universities in addition to the Triton shells. UCSD is set to face crews from Cornell, Georgetown, Holy Cross, Navy and host George Washington in the Potomac's waters on Friday and Saturday.

This weekend will mark UCSD's second-ever participation in the George Washington Rowing Invitational. In their 2010 Invitational debut, the Tritons were ranked at a program-high No. 20 by the U.S. Rowing National Collegiate Polls. UCSD had a strong showing on the weekend, battling gusty winds on the Potomac to stay competitive with a slate of storied Division I east coast programs. Highlights for the UCSD varsity eight squad from the 2010 regatta include a first place finish over Holy Cross and a second place finish, by fewer than three seconds, behind Georgetown.

At last weekend's San Diego Crew Classic, the Tritons recorded mixed results against some of the best crews from around the country. Two Triton shells qualified for grand final races, while the other two UCSD entrants raced for petite finals in the second day of action. The Triton second varsity eight squad won its petite final, edging second-finisher Gonzaga by one second, while the varsity eight shell finished third in its race. UCSD's novice eight boat finished in the middle of the pack in the Derek Guelker grand final, and the Tritons came in last in the Joan Ward Memorial men's open grand final.

UCSD will contend in two full days of races, spanning Apr. 6-7 in Washington Harbour. Live video coverage will be available on the GW All-Access channel (see link above).
