REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's crew team captured several wins in a series of dual races this weekend, facing boats from No. 9 Stanford, Orange Coast College and Oregon State in two days of racing at the Pac-12 Invitational. UCSD's novice eight boat came in ahead of the 9th-ranked Cardinal, and the Triton JV eight finished first against both OCC and OSU.

"The team did exceptionally well overall," said UCSD head coach Zach Johnson. "Especially the JV and frosh boats. Both have performed very well over the past couple of weekends."

On Saturday, UCSD faced crews from Stanford and Orange Coast College in two sets of dual races. The Triton novice eight crew clocked a time of 6:23 against Stanford, finishing two seconds ahead of the Cardinal. Division I Stanford is currently ranked No. 9 nationally.

UCSD's other win on day one was earned by the Triton JV eight boat, as it finished a commanding 20 seconds ahead of the OCC squad. UCSD clocked a time of 6:19, while the Pirates came in at 6:39.2.

In Saturday's varsity eight matchups, the Tritons finished behind both Stanford and OCC. Facing off against Stanford, UCSD finished with a time of 6:16.5, while the Cardinal clocked in at 5:55 for the win. In its second race of the day, UCSD finished behind OCC by a much thinner margin, coming in at 6:09.6. The Pirates finished in 6:06.

Sunday's contest included only one set of duals for UCSD, as the crews went head-to-head with Oregon State in the Redwood Shores waters. The Tritons' biggest highlight of the day came from the JV eight squad, which came in ahead of OSU by nearly five seconds.

"The JV eight boat has performed incredibly well over the past few weekends. They've been exceptionally great," Johnson said.

The Triton varsity eight squad finished second to the Beavers in Sunday's race, falling short by 20 seconds. UCSD finished in 6:18, while OSU clocked a sub-six minute time of 5:58.

"Varsity has been competing against some of the top crews in the country recently. We're showing that our young teams are the future, and that looks really bright. Hopefully the seniors will represent what they've done in the past these coming weeks," said Johnson.

The Tritons will return to conference competition at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships, held in Gold River, Calif. on Apr. 28-29.
