POMONA, Calif. – UC San Diego suffered a defeat to Cal Poly Pomona 78-67 Saturday at Kellogg Gym despite a career-high 25 points from Megan Perry. The Tritons could not overcome a slow start as the Broncos led from the opening tip to the final whistle.
UCSD falls to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), while CPP improves to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in CCAA play with a fourth straight win.
“We dug ourselves a hole against a good team,” said head coach Heidi VanDerveer. “They came out aggressive and it took us some time to get into the game. When you come out like we did, it proves to be a long night and it was.”
The Tritons fell behind 7-0 and eventually trailed 30-16 at the 6:52 mark. UCSD cut the deficit to nine at 30-21 following a block from Perry and a layup from Emily Morris, but the Broncos closed the half on a 16-5 run. Pomona grabbed its largest lead of the night of 22 points with 18 seconds left in the half as UCSD trailed 46-26 at the intermission.
The Broncos scored 20 points inside the paint and totaled 21 points off 12 Triton turnovers in the first period. UCSD was held to 9-of-26 shooting, a mark of 34.6%, and was outrebounded 17-15 in the half. The Broncos shot 18-of-30 from the floor (60%). Perry led the Tritons with nine points on three-of-four shooting, all from behind the arc.
UCSD came out in the second half and cut the Bronco lead to 10, 66-56, with 8:26 to play in regulation following a Miranda Seto three. The Broncos responded with a 10-3 run to put the game out of reach.
“In the second half, I thought we came out and competed a lot harder and were a lot sharper on our execution,” said VanDerveer. “We took it one possession at a time to climb back and had a shot to cut it to eight, but Pomona was just too strong tonight. We have to come out and play 40 minutes every night and it will be a lesson learned tonight.”
Perry scored her game-high 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the floor, making five-of-eight threes. She added three assists and three boards to her stat line. Stephanie Yano scored 10 points and dished out four assists, while Seto and Dana Webster scored nine points apiece in the loss for UCSD.
CPP had four players score in double figures, led by 24 from Ariel Marsh. Jada Blackwell (16), J.J. Judge (15) and Cydnie Jones (11) rounded out the scoring for the Broncos.
Overall, UCSD shot 44.6% from the floor (25-56) to the Broncos' 58.5% (31-53). The Tritons were outrebounded 31-26 and outscored 34-18 in the paint. They received 22 points off the bench.
The Tritons return to RIMAC Arena for CCAA play on Sunday, Dec. 22. UCSD hosts Cal State San Bernardino with tipoff slated for 2 p.m.
