After an immensely successful playing career, former standout Chelsea Carlisle was named an assistant coach with the women's basketball program in June 2012.

Carlisle assumes a spot on the bench after guiding the Tritons to an overall record of 30-3, a No. 1 national ranking and an appearance in the NCAA West Regional Championship game as a senior last season. UCSD's all-time assist leader, Carlisle joins head coach Heidi VanDerveer and lead assistant Betsy Butterick to round out the women's basketball coaching staff for 2012-13.

"I am extremely excited to have Chelsea join our staff," VanDerveer said. "Chelsea is incredibly passionate about UCSD and this program. It will be great to have her positive energy, remarkable work ethic and competitive spirit on our staff."

A four-year starter from 2008-12, Carlisle led the Tritons to three California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances during her time with the program. She wrapped up her career with averages of 16.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 2.2 steals in 118 games at UC San Diego.

One of the best players the program has ever seen, Carlisle graduates as UCSD's all-time career leader in assists (575), while ranking second in both scoring (1,950) and steals (262). She also set the program's single game scoring mark after erupting for 46 points against Grand Canyon at Disney Tip Off Classic in November 2010.

A three-time All-CCAA First Team selection, Carlisle was named the conference's Most Valuable Player as a sophomore in 2009-10 and again as a senior in 2011-12. She earned WBCA All-America accolades in each of her final three seasons as a Triton, becoming the first three-time All-American in program history.

Carlisle was also named the Daktronics West Region Player of the Year on two occasions during her career.

The former Oaks Christian High School product led UCSD to a banner season in 2011-12 as the Tritons won their first 26 games and went on to finish with a school-record 30 victories overall. UCSD established the best mark in the history of the CCAA at 21-1, earned the program's first-ever No. 1 national ranking and claimed the top seed in the NCAA Division II West Regional.

Carlisle averaged 16.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 2.6 steals per game and was named the CCAA MVP after leading the league in scoring, assists and steals during the regular season.

"I couldn't be more excited to have the opportunity to stay and coach at this amazing university and be able to work with Heidi and Betsy," Carlisle said. "UCSD has a tremendous athletic department and I feel so lucky to be able to be a part of the women's basketball coaching staff."

A native of Agoura Hills, Calif., Carlisle graduated from UCSD's Sixth College with a degree in communications in June. She will be involved with all aspects of coaching, including recruiting, scouting, travel and game preparation.
