Seven Tritons Recognized by MPSF for Academics
Release: Thursday 05/23/2013

WOODLAND, Calif. - Seven members of the UC San Diego men’s volleyball program displayed the proper credentials to be included on the 2013 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) All-Academic Team, as announced Thursday by MPSF executive director Al Beaird. The league recognized 43 student-athletes in all.

The Tritons honored were Sebastian Brady, Mike Brunsting, Garrett Dempsey, Carl Eberts, Chase Frishman, Cheyne Hayes and Fred Stahl. UCSD was tied with Stanford for the most players designated out of the 13 MPSF institutions.

The selections are based on criteria that includes a 3.00 or better cumulative grade-point average, the student-athlete being at least a sophomore academically, having completed one full academic year at the institution prior to this past season, and having competed in 50 percent or more of the institution’s matches for 2013.

UCSD’s seven awardees are believed to be an all-time program high, and are definitely the most going back through the 2004 season, and the most under current head coach Kevin Ring, who capped his eighth year in charge at his alma mater in April. Prior records are incomplete. Six Tritons made it onto the list in 2012.

Eberts, a fifth-year senior outside hitter out of Huntington Beach, is now a four-time MPSF All-Academic Team performer. He is a mechanical engineering major with a minor in philosophy. Frishman, a senior libero from Dana Point and a communication major with a minor in business, is a third-timer.

Brady, Brunsting and Hayes all earned the distinction for the second year in a row. Dempsey and Stahl are making their first appearances on the team.

Brady boasts the top GPA in the men’s volleyball program at 3.898, as well as the top average in the conference, with Hawai’i withholding its figures. The Chico product is a junior middle blocker and a double major in political science and philosophy.

Fellow junior Brunsting is a setter out of nearby Poway (Francis Parker School) who is majoring in human biology. A redshirt sophomore at opposite, Creston native Hayes is pursuing his degree in international studies-political science. Dempsey, from Palos Heights, Ill., is a sophomore setter majoring in biochemistry and cell biology. Stahl, a product of Sunnyvale and junior middle blocker, is a cognitive science with specialization in computation major.
