LEXINGTON, Ky. - Griffin Galvin, a libero from Folsom who has signed on to play collegiately at UC San Diego beginning with the 2014 season, was selected recently by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) to its seventh annual High School Senior All-America Team for boy’s volleyball.
Galvin was one of 10 prep standouts chosen to the second team. This year’s group of 20 student-athletes represents 16 high schools from seven different states. Twelve of them, including Galvin, are committed to one of nine of the 13 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation programs, with four headed to UCLA. Only high school seniors whose head coaches are AVCA members are eligible.
The 5-11 prospect was a four-year varsity player for head coach Wayne Campbell at Vista del Lago High School in Folsom, near Sacramento. Galvin captained his Eagles to three consecutive Sierra Valley Conference (SVC) titles, the last of them coming in early May with a perfect 12-0 mark, and back-to-back CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division II crowns. Vista del Lago finished 24-11 and as the section runner-up during Galvin’s just-completed senior campaign, falling 3-0 to Whitney in the title match. He is a three-time All-SVC pick and 2012 SVC Most Valuable Player, with this season’s postseason honors still to be announced in the coming days.
Galvin graduated from Vista last Friday, May 31. He, along with opposite Adam Martell from Pewaukee, Wis., made up the two-player class for UCSD head coach Kevin Ring during the early National Letter-of-Intent signing period back in December. Galvin was named to the South team for the 16th Annual Optimist All-Star Boy’s Volleyball Match for graduating seniors that took place on May 30.
“Griffin will continue the tradition we’ve had here at UCSD of having a top-level libero,” said Ring at the time of his signing announcement. “He is very good in serve-receive and as a defender.”
Galvin will play for a select regional side at the 2013 USA Volleyball High Performance Championships in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., from July 23-27, before arriving in La Jolla.
