After playing three matches last week at UC Santa Barbara's Collegiate Invitational to open the season, the UC San Diego men's volleyball team jumps right into Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) action this week, playing at No. 7 UC Irvine Wednesday and hosting No. 5 UCSB Friday.
The Tritons, who are receiving votes in the AVCA poll, went 1-2 at the tournament, losing in four to then-No. 9 UCLA and No. 12 Cal State Northridge before defeating Cal Baptist 3-1 to take seventh place. Senior setter Phil Bannan got his 3,500th career assist against the Bruins. Currently, he sits in second place in UCSD's record book with 3,612 career assists. He needs just 256 more to surpass Brooks Dierdorff, who amassed 3,867 from 2004-07.
Junior opposite Shane Veiga led UCSD in kill production in all three matches. He posted 14 vs. UCLA, 19 against the Matadors and capped the tourney off with 15 in the win over the Lancers – ALL match-highs. Veiga entered the season with 22 career kills, 12 in 2010 and 10 in 2008.
UC Irvine enters Wednesday night's contest at the Bren Center (6 p.m.) with a 2-2 record. The Anteaters opened with a five-set loss at Cal Baptist, then finished fifth with a 2-1 mark at UCSB's tournament. They lost to Long Beach State and defeated Cal Baptist and Cal State Northridge in Santa Barbara.
UCI has won the last five meetings with UC San Diego.
UC Santa Barbara finished second in its own tourney with a 2-1 record. The Gauchos topped CSUN and UCLA, but fell in four sets to BYU in the championship match.
UCSD will host its alumni match on Jan. 15 (2 p.m.) before welcoming top-ranked USC to RIMAC Arena on Friday, Jan. 21 (7 p.m.). The Trojans have held the No. 1 spot in both AVCA polls this season.
Tickets for home matches are available at the door. As always, UCSD students are admitted free with a valid school ID. For more ticket information, please click here.
