LA JOLLA, Calif. - After a slow start by both teams, No. 3 Long Beach State upped its game to defeat No. 12 UC San Diego 3-1 in MPSF men's volleyball action Friday night at RIMAC Arena. Carl Eberts posted a match-high 11 kills, but it wasn't enough as the 49ers hit .319 and had a good block working.
UCSD (6-9, 3-6 MPSF) won the first set, 25-21, but lost the next three by scores of 25-20, 25-21 and 25-21.
Long Beach State (7-5, 6-3) kept its win streak against the Tritons alive as the 49ers haven't lost in the last seven meetings. UCSD's last win vs. LBSU came in 2007.
Both squads came out a bit sluggish in the opening set. UCSD hit .150, while Long Beach swung at a dreadful .080. Both teams turned it around for the next three sets, but the 49ers hit over .300 in each frame, while the Tritons came in under .300 in all three sets. LBSU hit a match-best .419 in the fourth set.
It was the seventh time in his last eight matches that Eberts had posted double-digit kill totals. He also added eight digs but, unfortunately, he only hit .034 with 10 errors in 29 attacks. Shane Veiga followed with 10 kills, while freshman middle blocker Sebastian Brady posted nine kills and just one error in 12 attacks, good for a .615 hitting percentage. Brady also racked up an assist, an ace and four blocks while finishing with a team-high 13.0 points.
For Long Beach, Antwain Aguillard and Taylor Crabb matched Eberts with 11 kills each. Ryan Meehan went 7-0-9 for a .778 attack percentage. Meehan also had seven blocks as the Beach out-blocked the Tritons 11-4. Brad Hemmerling put away 10 kills and setter Mike Klipsch had a match-high 13 digs.
