LONG BEACH, Calif. - Sophomore outside Carl Eberts laid down a match-high 15 kills Saturday, but the 11th-ranked UC San Diego men's volleyball team lost, 3-1, at No. 5 Long Beach State.
UCSD (9-19, 5-16 MPSF) came out firing and took the first set by a score of 25-17. However, LBSU (13-13, 11-10 MPSF) won the next three, 25-21, 25-17 and 25-20. It was the final road match of the season for the Tritons.
The two teams matched up well. UCSD hit .257 and LBSU hit .276. The Tritons held a slight advantage in blocks, 11.5 to 11. UC San Diego hurt itself at the service line, committing 18 errors.
Eberts also had four digs and a block and totled 15.5 points. Freshman Nick Iorfino posted 10 kills, four digs and three blocks, while libero Chase Frishman recorded a team-high nine digs. Freshman middle blocker Sebastian Brady had a career-high seven blocks and freshman setter Mike Brunsting ran his assist total to 42, also a career-best.
For the 49ers, Taylor Crabb recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs. Antwain Aguillard finished with eight blocks.
UCSD closes out its season at RIMAC Arena on Saturday, Apr. 16 as it hosts UC Irvine at 7 p.m. Seniors Phil Bannan, Joel Davidson, Calvin Ross and Paul Spitsen will be honored as they'll be suiting up for their final career matches.
