Five-Match Win Streak Halted at No. 1 USC

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The 11th-ranked UC San Diego men's volleyball team had its five-match win streak halted Thursday as No. 1 USC swept the Tritons at the Galen Center. Scores were 25-16, 25-15 and 25-20.

UCSD, which had won five consecutive matches for the first time since the 1990 season, fell to 8-17 overall and 6-14 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. USC, winners of 14 straight, improved to 19-4 and 15-4.

The Tritons were out-blocked 13-4 and held to just a .010 attack percentage with 27 kills and 26 errors in 97 attempts. The Trojans swung at .259 with 32 kills and 11 errors in 81 swings.

Outside hitter Carl Eberts finished with 12 kills and 13 points, both team-highs for UCSD. He also added six digs and a pair of blocks. Libero Chase Frishman had a match co-high 10 digs, his fourth straight match with 10 or more digs.

USC got a match-high 15 kills from Tony Ciarelli. He had three aces, four digs and four blocks as well. Steven Shandrick hit .583 with seven kills and no errors in 12 attacks while also tallying five blocks. Robert Feathers blocked six balls and Henry Cassiday and Micah Christenson each recorded 10 digs.  

The Trojans sided out 77% of the time.

The Tritons play at No. 6 Pepperdine Saturday night at 7 p.m. The Waves dropped a five-set match vs. UC Irvine Thursday night at Firestone Fieldhouse.
