LA JOLLA, Calif. - Four Tritons had 10 or more kills and Chase Frishman totaled 17 digs as the No. 12 UC San Diego men's volleyball team defeated Cal Baptist in five sets Thursday at RIMAC Arena. Scores in the non-conference match went 20-25, 25-15, 23-25, 25-21 and 15-5.

UCSD improved its season record to 9-18 while CBU fell to 12-16. The Lancers are in their final year of transitioning from NAIA to NCAA Division II status and will become a member of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) for the 2013 season.

UCSD held advantages in almost every statistical category, including kills (65 to 48), hitting percentage (.346 to .237), assists (57-45), aces (4 to 3), blocks (10.5 to 9), reception percentage (.961 to .954) and sideout percentage (70% to 60%). The Tritons had 65 kills and 20 errors in 130 attacks for the .346 percentage, their second-best of the season.

Carl Eberts led all players with 19 kills and was followed by Cheyne Hayes (13), Vaun Lennon (12) and Sebastian Brady (11). Hayes hit .320 and added seven digs and five blocks, while Brady swung .529 from the middle and totaled three blocks. Fred Stahl had five blocks and setter Garrett Dempsey amassed 48 assists on the night.

For Frishman, it was the eighth time this season he had recorded 10 or more digs. The libero has posted double-digit dig totals in five of the team's last six matches.

The Lancers were led by Jonathan Tuttle and Aaron McCalmont, who had 13 and 11 kills, respectively. McCalmont completed a double-double by adding a team-high 13 digs.

UCSD really turned it on in the fourth and fifth sets. In the fourth, the Tritons hit .481 (15-2-27) and sided out 81 percent of the time. They bettered the effort in the final frame, hitting an amazing .923 (12-0-13) and siding out in all six chances. UCSD led wire to wire in both sets.

The Tritons entered the night with a slim chance to earn the eighth and final spot in the MPSF Tournament, but Cal State Northridge defeated Pepperdine in four sets to clinch the berth and eliminate UCSD from the hunt.

The season wraps up for the Tritons Saturday as they host No. 2 UC Irvine at 7 p.m. The match will be covered by live video and live stats.
