LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's basketball team ended its winning streak at four games with a 73-50 defeat from No. 4 Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday at RIMAC Arena.

The Tritons, who drop to seventh place in the conference, are 9-10 overall and 8-8 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. UCSD will go on the road to reclaim its winning ways at 10th-place Cal State Stanislaus (7-13, 4-12 CCAA) in a game slated to go off at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

Freshman guard/forward Hunter Walker scored the team-high 14 points to go along with three rebounds, one assist and a steal. Junior guard James McCann put up 10 points, one rebound and three assists.

CPP junior guard DeRonn Scott led all scorers with 17 points and had two rebounds and two assists. Scott was supported by senior guard Mitchel Anderson, who had 14 points, a share of the game-high six rebounds, three assists, one block and a steal. Also with six rebounds was junior guard Terrence Drisdom, who scored 12 points and contributed two assists and a game-high three steals while senior center Mohamed Fall finished with 11 points, four rebounds and a steal.

Though UCSD shot well in the first half, hitting 13 of 23 (56.5%) from the field, the Tritons' shooting percentage fell greatly in the second half with a 7-for-22 (31.8%) performance. In comparison, CPP went 13-for-27 (48.1%) and 11-for-21 (52.4%) for the first and second half, respectively.

In addition, the Tritons made six fewer three-pointers in the game, 10-4, while converting a total of six free throws, nine less than the Broncos' 15 for the game. UCSD was also outscored by the Broncos in points off turnovers, 23-13.

Trailing the Broncos, 35-30, at the onset of the second half, the Tritons were within reach of evening the score with CPP. However, a 12-0 run by the Broncos at the start of the closing frame dashed any hopes of UCSD turning its four-game win streak into a five-game span. Anderson's trey with 14:24 left in regulation gave the Broncos a 47-30 lead.

Free throws by McCann cut the deficit to as few as 15 at the 13:59 mark and made the score, 47-32. But Scott extended the Broncos' lead with five straight points in a 20-second span, ending the stretch with a three-pointer to put the Broncos up by a score of 52-32 with 13:01 remaining in regulation.

Although the second half was a one-sided affair, the potential of a huge upset over the fourth-ranked team in the country was still in the cards for the Tritons during the first half.

After the Broncos concluded a 9-0 run to lead at the 12:36 mark, 18-5, the Tritons assembled a 7-0 run. Walker highlighted the span with the run's first five points on a layup and a three-pointer. Senior guard Tyler McGrath's layup finished the run with 10:16 to go before halftime to bring the Tritons within six points, 18-12.

But the Tritons were not done. Following Scott's three-pointer at the 3:48 mark to give the Broncos a double-digit, 32-21 lead, the Tritons took off on a 9-0 run. Senior forward Justin Brue scored four of the run's points. McCann's layup not only closed the stretch with 1:11 before the intermission, but also brought UCSD within a field goal, 32-30, of tying the game.

Unfortunately, the momentum the Tritons had accumulated in nearly three minutes was stolen by Scott, who more than doubled the Broncos' lead, 35-30, upon drilling a trey with 54 seconds to go in the opening half to begin a 15-0 CPP run spanning both halves.

The first-place Broncos, who improve to 19-1 overall and 15-1 in CCAA games, will host 12th-place Cal State East Bay (5-15, 4-12 CCAA) in a contest scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off on Thursday.
