Release: Friday 11/22/2013

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. - The UC San Diego men remain in second through two days at the 2013 Arena Invitational on Friday. UCSD is hosting the annual three-day meet at East Los Angeles College Swim Stadium.

The Triton men have 849 points, with Hawai’i in the lead at 1131. Pacific (739) has narrowly overtaken Cal Poly (733) for third. The UCSD women are 10th with 344.5 points, with San Diego State (796) now ahead of San Jose State (746) in first.

Nicholas Korth won his second individual event in as many nights at ELAC Swim Stadium, taking the 100 breaststroke in 53.59 over Hawai’i’s Paulo dePaula (53.78). Korth had tied for first in the 50 free on Thursday night. Friday marked a three-peat for the two-time Triton captain in the 100 breast at the Arena, with this year’s performance his best yet after winning in 54.21 in 2012 and 53.70 in 2011. He fell narrowly short of his school record of 53.08 from the 2013 NCAA Championships.

Both UCSD men’s A foursomes in the 200 medley relay and 800 free relay placed second behind Hawai’i at either end of the night portion of the second day. Julian Jacobs, Korth, Jack Galvan and Reid McCallum went 1:31.11 in the 200 medley, before sophomores Paul Li, AJ Zavala, Michael Leung and senior anchor Alex Merrill timed 6:42.42 in the 800.

All four Triton relays, two each for the men and the women, posted NCAA consideration qualifying marks.

Li was third individually in the 400 individual medley (3:57.10), with another sophomore, Kyle Nadler (4:00.37) also in the championship final in sixth.

Naomi Thomas touched seventh in the 100 butterfly in a time of 56.45. On the men’s side, Ahiram Rodriguez (51.28) and Luke Mitchell (51.41) went 5-6 in the 100 fly.

Senior captain Anji Shakya was the eighth-place finisher in the 200 free, going 1:51.49.

Freshman Zach Yong joined Korth in the 100 breast final, placing seventh in 58.45.

Jacobs (50.10) and Leung (51.60) were third and seventh, respectively in the 100 back, with Jacobs’ finals time a B standard.

The 2013 Arena Invitational concludes on Saturday, Nov. 23, with preliminaries at 9 a.m. and the finals session starting at 5 p.m.
