LA JOLLA, Calif. – The 12th-ranked UC San Diego women’s water polo team concluded Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) play 4-0 after beating Cal State San Bernardino, 16-6, Friday night at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
The Tritons receive the top seed at the WWPA Championships in La Jolla on Apr. 25-27 following their sixth consecutive win. UCSD stands at 23-10 overall.
UCSD was led by four scores from Sarah Lizotte and two apiece from Julia Kirkland, Melissa Bartow, Nicole Gerwin and Lauren Boyer. The Tritons have now scored in double-digits in six consecutive games. Alexsee Wilcox recorded nine saves in the cage for UCSD.
The Tritons led from start to finish after Jolene Guiliana won the opening sprint to give possession to Lizotte, who scored from the two-meter line :26 seconds into the game to put UCSD ahead 1-0. The Tritons scored two more times, one each from Bartow and Lizotte, before the Coyotes scored on a six-on-five advantage to jump on the scoreboard. UCSD poured in four more goals compared to CSUSB’s one to lead 7-2 after the first period.
UCSD added a pair of scores in the second quarter to make the score 9-3 at the intermission. The period was highlighted by a Guiliana steal and breakaway score.
The Tritons finished off the victory by scoring four times in the third period and twice in the final frame to win 16-6.
The Coyotes fall to 3-20 overall and 0-6 in WWPA play following the loss.
The Tritons face San Diego State in the 13th annual Harper Cup at Canyonview Aquatic Center next Friday, Apr. 18 at 6 p.m. SDSU holds a perfect 12-0 record in the Harper Cup matches. Melissa Bartow, Allison Delgado, Sarah Lizotte and Leah Gonzales will be honored before the game for Senior Night.
