As a team, UCSD is second in the CCAA and fourth nationally in free throw percentage. The Tritons have made 93 of 122 attempts from the line, 76.2 percent. Individually, Tyler McGrath leads the league at 86.2 percent (25-for-29) and James McCann is ninth at 80.6 percent (29-for-36). McGrath finished the 2011-12 season as the CCAA's leader in free throw percentage at .833.

Guards Tyler McGrath and James McCann currently rank among the CCAA's top 10 scorers. McGrath is sixth, averaging 16.7 points per game, while McCann is ninth at 13.6. Both have recorded 10 or more points in six of seven games this season, which included a career high 33 for McGrath against Fresno Pacific on Nov. 10. McCann rang up a season best 21 points at Cal State San Bernardino on Nov. 24, one short of his career high.

Statisticians have called out the above phrase frequently this season. James McCann is second among CCAA players with his 4.1 assists per game average. He has tallied multiple helpers in all seven games to date, including a season-best seven at Cal State San Bernardino, one less than his career high. Last season, McCann averaged 3.9 assists per game, the third-best mark in the league.

It really has been a tale of two halves for the Tritons so far this season. In four of seven games, UCSD has taken a halftime lead into the locker room, but has gone winless in those contests. Overall in the opening half, UCSD is shooting .447 from the floor compared to .415 for opponents. However, its shooting percentage drops to .364 in the second stanza while the opponents are hitting shots at a .522 clip. The Tritons are out-scoring their competition 32.3 to 30.3 in the first half but getting out-scored 40.3 to 32.4 in the second.

Senior forward Justin Brue is UCSD's top rebounder, averaging 6.7 boards a game. He ranks eighth overall in the CCAA. Most recently, Brue pulled down a season high 10 rebounds against Cal State San Bernardino at home on Dec. 30, just one shy of his career best. He is the only Triton to record a double-digit rebound total so far this season.

UCSD'S win against Fresno Pacific on Nov. 10 gave the program its 599th victory. Since the 1965-66 season, the Tritons have accumulated a 599-627 overall record, good for a .489 win percentage.

In its last game, UCSD suffered a 73-58 loss against Cal State San Bernardino at RIMAC Arena on Dec. 30. The score was tied 35-35 at halftime, but the Tritons made just 21% of their shots in the second half after shooting 52% in the opening frame. Conversely, the Coyotes improved their shooting from 42% to 52%. UCSD's Tyler McGrath poured in a game high 19 points, while James McCann added 13. Justin Brue led all players with 10 rebounds as the Tritons held a 43-30 advantage on the boards. CSUSB was paced by Kwame Alexander, who totaled 18 points, eight rebounds, three steals, two assists and two blocks.

Currently ranked sixth in the country, Cal Poly Pomona enters Thursday's game undefeated at 8-0 overall and in first place in the CCAA with a 4-0 record. The Broncos have been off since Dec. 15 when they defeated Humboldt State by a score of 69-47 at Kellogg Gym. Mohamed Fall and Shannon Sharpe were ejected from that game and, due to CCAA rules, will have to sit out against the Tritons this week. CPP leads the nation in scoring defense, limiting opponents to just 53.9 points per game. Mitchel Anderson leads the team in scoring and rebounding at 16.8 points and 7.9 boards per game.

The Cal Poly Pomona staff has strong UCSD ties. Head coach Greg Kamansky played for the Tritons from 1983-87 and ranks fourth on the school's scoring list with 1,588 career points. Clint Allard, in his first season as an assistant coach with the Broncos, played at UCSD from 2004-08. He recorded 1,150 points, which is 10th all-time, while his 414 assists rank third in program history. Allard was an assistant coach with the Tritons from 2008 through the 2011-12 season.

Humboldt State enters the week with a 5-3 overall record and a 1-3 mark in the CCAA, good for a ninth place standing. The Jacks host Cal State San Bernardino Thursday night before entertaining the Tritons Saturday. In its last game, HSU wiped out Pacifica University, 112-57, on Dec. 19 in Arcata. Humboldt, which is 4-1 at home this season, is out-scoring opponents 71.5 to 61.9. Alec Williams ranks third in the league with his 17.3 points per game average. He also leads the Lumberjacks in rebounding, pulling down 7.5 boards a contest.

Prior to Cal State San Bernardino scoring 90 on Nov. 24, no UCSD opponent had posted a point total that high since Cal State Monterey Bay won 97-93 in double overtime on Jan. 26, 2008 at RIMAC Arena. The last time an opponent put up 90-plus in regulation was on Jan. 4, 2007 when Humboldt State downed the Tritons 90-76 in Arcata.

UCSD returns all but one of its starters from last season, including full-timers James McCannTyler McGrath and Justin Brue, along with part-timers MacKenzie McCullough and Ryan Peters. That group accounted for 61% of the team's scoring and 50% of its rebounds. The lone loss was big man Christian Hatch, who led the Tritons in scoring (12.5/game) and rebounding (7.3/game). The center was named to the All-CCAA Second Team.

UCSD head coach Chris Carlson will be a weekly guest on XX Sports 1090's "Coach" Kentera Show. Carlson will join host John Kentera every Tuesday at approximately 8:30 p.m. You can listen online as well at
