UCSD Picked To Finish 11th In CCAA Standings By League’s Coaches

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's basketball team was selected to finish 11th in the California Collegiate Athletic Association regular season standings, according to the league's annual preseason coaches poll that was released on Thursday.

UCSD, which finished ninth in the CCAA with a 7-15 conference record last season, received 21 points in the poll.

Defending national champion Cal Poly Pomona was picked to win the 2010-11 CCAA regular season title, receiving 10 first place votes and a total of 120 points to easily capture the top spot.

Cal State Dominguez Hills collected 100 points and earned one first place vote to finish second, while Cal State San Bernardino was third after garnering 98 points. Humboldt State, which earned the remaining first place vote, tallied 95 points to finish fourth, followed by Chico State (85), Sonoma State (69), Cal State Stanislaus (58), San Francisco State (52), Cal State L.A. (51), and Cal State Monterey Bay (31) coming in fifth through 10th, respectively.

Cal State East Bay, which is in its second season as a member of the CCAA and still going through its exploratory phase, finished 12th behind UCSD with 12 points. The Pioneers are not eligible for the conference title.

After advancing to the CCAA Championship Tournament in back-to-back seasons, the Tritons finished with an overall record of 8-17 last year, missing the postseason for the first time since 2007. UCSD went 4-2 during a six-game stretch in February to stay in contention for a conference tournament berth, but a pair of losses to Sonoma State and Humboldt State the final week of the regular season dashed the Tritons' postseason hopes.

Chris Carlson returns for his fourth season as head coach of the Tritons in 2010-11, welcoming back two starters and nine letterwinners from last year's squad. Among the returnees is junior center Christian Hatch, who averaged 8.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per game in 2009-10, and senior guard Casey Ryan, who put up a career-best 6.5 points and led UCSD pulling down 7.0 boards per game. Ryan also shot a team-high 52% from the field last season.

In addition to the nine returners, the Triton coaching staff will also usher in six talented recruits in 2010-11, a number of which are expected to step in and contribute right away.

UCSD will open the season with exhibition matchups against UC Irvine and UC Santa Cruz on November 2 and 6, respectively, before tipping off the regular season at the Disney West Coast Tipoff Classic November 12-14 in Anaheim. The Tritons are scheduled to face off with Lewis University, Dixie State and Alaska Anchorage during the three-day event.
