WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's basketball team was selected to finish 10th in the California Collegiate Athletic Association regular season standings, according to the league's annual preseason coaches poll that was released on Thursday.

UCSD, which finished 11th in the conference with a 6-16 record last season, received 32 points in the poll, finishing 15 behind ninth place San Francisco State.

Defending regular season champion Humboldt State was picked to win the 2011-12 CCAA title, receiving nine first place votes and a total of 119 points. Cal State San Bernardino collected 106 points and two first place votes to finish second, while Cal State Dominguez Hills was third after garnering 90 points and the remaining first place vote.

Cal Poly Pomona tallied 89 points to finish fourth, followed by Cal State L.A. (77), Cal State Stanislaus (74), Chico State (70), Sonoma State (53) and San Francisco State (47) in fifth through ninth places, respectively.

Cal State Monterey Bay (18) and Cal State East Bay (17) finished in 11th and 12th place behind UCSD.

UCSD finished with an overall record of 11-17 in 2010-11, missing the postseason for the second year in a row. The Tritons recorded the program's best start in 10 seasons at the NCAA Division II level after going 5-1 in nonconference play, but they won just six games in the ultra-competitive CCAA and finished six games below .500 for the year.

Head coach Chris Carlson, who enters his fifth season at the helm, welcomes back 10 letterwinners and four starters from last year's squad in 2011-12. Among the returnees is senior center Christian Hatch, who is the Tritons' top returning scorer and rebounder after averaging 14.5 points and 6.7 rebounds last year, and junior forward Justin Brue, who averaged 9.2 points and 4.9 boards during a breakout sophomore campaign.

The Tritons will kick off the 2011-12 season with an exhibition matchup at Division I Utah State this Friday at 6:05 p.m. PST. After battling the Aggies, UCSD will head to Berkeley to square off with Pac-12 power Cal on Tuesday, November 1. Tipoff for that contest is slated for 7:30 p.m.

The Tritons will then open the regular season at the Disney West Coast Tip Off Classic November 4-6 in Anaheim. UCSD will face Chestnut Hill, Western Washington and Dominican, looking to capture a second consecutive Disney Classic title.
